Designed to trade with the various ranches, gold and anium camps such as Basin, the outfitting town was named Castleton. Castle alley was named for a large castle-like rock formation in the center of the valley. astleton reputedly contained grocery stores, a hotel, two saloons and restaurants, ivery stable, blacksmith and cobbler shops, deputy sheriff, physician’s and mine ffices, a sunday school and several homes. The town at its peak, about 1895, was igger than Moab. When the mines played out, about 1910, most businesses and residents moved ut, leaving only 50 people and the post office. When the great cattle days ended 'n the early 1900’s the town’s final support collapsed and the town died. The only things left now are some old cabin and rock house buildings and ‘ns, a double row of dead populars and a heavy duty ore loading bin.
