Show FLAMING TIMES QUOTATIONS— IDEAS: “And here, according to Trout was the reason human beings could not reject bad ideas: “Ideas on Earth were badges of friendship or enmity. Their content did not matter. Friends agreed with friends, in order to express friendliness. Enemies disagreed with enemies, in order to express enmity. “The ideas Earthlings held didn’t matter for hundreds of thousands of years, since they could’t do much about them anyway. Ideas might as well b e badges as anything. “They even had a saying about the futility of ideas: ‘If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.’ “And then Earthlings discovered tools. Suddenly agreeing with friends could be a form of suicide or worse. But agreements went on, not for the sake of common sense or decency or self—preservation, but for friendliness. “Earthlings went on being friendly, when they should have been thinking instead. And even when they built computers to do some thinking for them, they designed them not so much for wisdom as for friendliness. So they were doomed. Homicidal beggars could ride.” KURT VONNEGUT - AUGUST 15, 1995 - OUR ROADS Fire, p.1 Goat heads continue to dominate the Road Depatment’s attention this month. John released 2000 goat head eating beetles arong the valley. These critters are 1/8th inch long and 1/16th inch wide. They are a dark blackish color with typical beetle features of hard shell with crusty wings. Athough they can fly, they usually crawl. They attack the flowers by not spead to the junipers and race up the valley. The A frame house was engulfed in flames and was probably a total loss even before the fire crews arrived. The house was completely reduced to ashes, with only an occasional metal appliance frame or metal pipe jutting out of the pile. The fire siren located on Castle Valley Drive at the jog in the road (between Lazarus and Bailey Lanes) was used to summon help for this fire and was probably responsible for the large turn out of valley residents. If the fire had begun to get out of control, all possible help would have been needed. (If you can turn out to help at a valley fire, bringing a shovel or something like a large towel or small blanket to beat out grass fires, can really help.) After the dramatic part of the fire had been extinguished, CV Volunteer firefighters had to stay long after everyone else had gone home, putting out the last smouldering embers. The CV Volunteer Fire Dept. could always use more volunteers. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the CV Volunteer Fire Dept. should call Floyd Stoughton at 259-6049. boring holes in them, thus preventing seed formation. Given the epidemic proportion of this year’s goat head crop, including much seed development, we can’t expect much reduction in this year’s goat heads. Given that the seeds can last up tp 7 years these little beetles will have a chance to prove their worth in the years to come. John reports that the lower sections of our side roads are the most infected. Damian will be putting in time removing the more mature plants this year in hopes of containing the plants. Any plants the rest of us pull is that fewer for the Road crew. Ed Derderian will be brush hogging the side road easements again this year. John will confer with Fire Chief, Floyd Stoughton, to see whether now or after the sun flowers have bloomed would be preferable. The road grader will be heading to Skyline Transport shortly. Repairs will include the clutch and related items. Joan Sangree, Roads Chair TRUTH “ You have no use for truth?” said Beatrice. “You know what truth is?” said Karabekian. “It’s some crazy thing my neighbor believes. If I want to make friends with him, I ask him what he believes. He tells me, and I say, ‘Yeah, yeah—ain’t it the truth?’ ” KURT VONNEGUT 7 GRAND RIVER ELECTRIC Residential Electrical Contractor * New construction * Remodel * Rewire and repair * Service upgrades * Licensed and insured Call Brian Murray at 259-8113 |
