This is his way of determining that work is progressing. If no inspections are requested within 6 months, the building inspector may require that the permit be renewed (at considerable expense). Usually some type of pro-rating will be applied if the permit must be renewed. As an example, one permit had to be renewed (at a cost of $175) several weeks ago. If the people had known about this requirement, they could have had inspections done as they progressed, rather than waiting to have them done all at once later on. Jack Campbell an unwanted plant, and you can either pull it or learn to like it. Such was my crazy reasoning when a respectable source told me that Salsola iberica, aka. Russian Thistle (or tumbleweed, to you and me) has a higher nutritional value than alfalfa. The young plants, when ground well, make an excellent cattle fodder. So, logic demands that what’s good for the goose must be good for the gander, and I ventured to try a little on my own. Tumbleweed doesn’t look like tumbleweed when it’s young. (I can’t recommend eating those giant, thorny obstacles that bounce back and forth along the roads every fall and line your wire fences every winter.) The dark green, succlent branches and leaves of young tumbleweed actually look and feel soft. Only the tips have little thorns, though I suppose you could call all those small hairs spines. You can recognize young specimens of S. iberica by the dark red or maroon stripes along the undersides of the branches at the base. It is best to collect them when small (say six inches or less) and/or to remove any of the larger branches, which are woody and no fun to chew. I honestly can’t recommend tumbleweeds in salads. No matter how long I marinated them, the spines would still stick in my craw. But, when cooked sufficiently, the spines soften to provide an unusual, though not unpleasant, texture. ...More Russia...p 2... for recipes |
