Show CASTLE VALLEY TIMES RECOI/ERY TIMES Castle Valley, Utah -- Volume 4, Number 5 -- MAY 15, 1995 -- BACK TO WORK AGAIN! Greetings—1 am Melody ELECTION RESULTS: For Keeping Town: Against Keeping Town: 98 69 Let’s try to make it work! GRAND COUNTY BUSINESS LICENSE FEE Grand County has been charging Castle Valley businesses a $50 business license fee--— POA SPECIAL MEETING: There will be a special meeting of the POA on Wed, May 24 at 7pm at the LDS Church, to vote on the transfer of money from the POA to the Town and to vote on whether or not the POA members want their ballots available for public inspection. All property owners should have received a ballot in the mail last week. It is the responsibility of the property owners to make sure that the POA has your current mailing address! (Since the LDS Church is now under construction, be aware of last minute signs indicating change of meeting location!) TOWN COUNCIL OPENINGS: The Town has received formal resignations from Donovan Roberts and Cindy Furman effective the end of this month. Both Donovan and Cindy are moving out of the valley and will not be able to complete their terms. These will be 6 month appointments, since both seats will have to be on the election ballot next November. This means that there will be three Town Council seats before the voters next fall. If you are interested in applying for the vacant Town Council seats, write the Town of Castle Valley, CVSR Box 2705, Moab, UT 84532 or call Mayor Valli Smouse for more information. incorrectly! No one has ever questioned the practice. Last month there was a public notice involving an amendment to Grand County’s ordinance to collect the business license fee. In the description of the ordinance, it clearly stated that the business license fee only applied to the unincorporated areas of the county, outside of any cities or towns. Further checking seems to confirm that these fees have been incorrectly collected from Castle Valley residents with businesses. Apparently the County Council will decide whether or not to return the fees erroneously collected. Jack Campbell LDS CHURCH EXPANSION PROJECT Construction began this week on the expansion for the Castle Valley Branch LDS Church. The project will approximately double the size of the church. The existing building will be extended straight out towards Castle Valley Drive. The roof line will follow the existing line. The extra building space will be used primarily for class rooms and other small work rooms. Three of the new rooms will have movable partitions, so the space could be used as a larger assembly room. New carpeting and remodeling will occur in the present wing. Construction is scheduled to continue through the summer. Jack Campbell Pace Taylor and am your newly appointed POA officer for the next 6 months. To quote a newcomer, “First some background.” I am a born and bred Salt Lake City girl. My parents met on their Mormon mission in southern California. My lineage goes back to Brigham Young, John Doyle Lee (of Lee’s Ferry fame), and I’ve worked with my cousin, Stuart Udall, on several importantfissues. Although I am now what my family refers to as a “fallen child,” I am very proud of my heritage I feel Utahis the most unique state in the union. .Historically, Geographically, and Scenically. Moab is the jewel of Utah—Castle Valley, the brightest fire. We are lucky to live here. I have been politically active since 4th grade. Even more so since I moved to Castle Valley in 1974. I was at the 1st POA meeting held and in 21 years have missed very few. I have watched and been involved with the development of this community. We’ve done pretty good. From a melting pot of people and places, we have developed into the Town of Castle Valley. We are a small community, true, but we are tight. We have a slice of Paradise, friendships that will last lifetimes, neighbors who, even when we disagree, will helpin time of need. I feel that people should be very humble here, Thankful for a group of people being here working so hard to ensure the future. ‘Count your many blessings,” as a favorite hymn states This Valley has a spirit of its Melody continued, p 2 |
