Show 6 -NEW TIMES . JANUARY 1993 would save money. Law enforcement w0uld take longer. The County could do a lot with BLM. I understand the multiple use aspect and the need to starting point when conflicts or issues keep roads open, but we don’t need to of multiple interest arise, with all be so adversarial. Federal acquisition of the inholdings in Arches would help reduce the management burden and allow each of us to do what we need. interested parties represented, including JOHN HARTLEY County Issues: We need to learn how to address the needs of people from Elgin and Castle Valley, particu- larly how to improve their infrastructure and keep it current. Challenges: Getting control of the budget and developing a good master plan for the unincorporated areas that are next to the population areas. Health Services: A fully staffed, emergency treatment facility to handle emergency stabilization for heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and suicide attempts, as well as common surgical procedures and routine testing. We need to provide beds, rooms, and care for increasing tourists and population. Cooperation: I'd like to see a committee like the Blue Ribbon Committee on the River Corridor be the the Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Forest Service. DAN HOLYOAK County Issues: Book Cliffs Road, needs of citizens in outlying areas. Things we can do for our county come way before building a road to bring other people in. Also the issue of how to produce additional income, attracting a clean and acceptable industry. Top priority, getting some kind of industry that would give jobs throughout the year. Challenges: Getting an acceptable and clean industry in here that produces the kind of economic base we need. Making the hospital more than a first aid station. Health Services: The very best we could provide outside of major surgery. Home Health Care needs to be addressed with the creation of a new We should not consider our hospital a first aid station and look to Grand Junction or elsewhere for the services health care district. Senior citizens especially need home health care when we need. Cooperation: One police depart- they are unable to travel due to weather, illness, or lack of reliable ment would save some expense, and a countywide dump operated jointly. transportation. There are many things that could be done if everyone agreed. DELBERT OLIVER County Issues: I have a great love for Castle Valley. I worked on the Castle Valley ranches most of the summers when I was in high school, hoeing corn and mowing, raking and stacking hay. In those days, Burt Bachannan ran the lower ranch, and Vern Bliss ran the upper ranch. I love your valley and will do all I can to keep it beautiful and to help the people who live there with their problems. What those problems are, you tell me and I’ll do all I can to help. I have found that in order to help people I had to gather a great deal of information, such as what their needs were, what their problems were, what their goals were, and what they had to work with. To plan without the facts is, at best, a shot in the dark. Other candidates may have all the answers, I do not. Challenges: The biggest challenge the next four years will most likely be to find a way for 7 men to all pull together. To forget their selfish pride and personal interests and to work in harmony for the betterment of the people of Grand County, now and in the future. Health Services: In the matter of the hospital, we need to provide the citizens of Grand County with a good medical facility, and the best medical help that we can. Cooperation: The City and County could work together in many areas of government. Here again, those in authority will have to swallow their pride and give up what they perceive to be personal controls. There are many wonderful people working in the BLM at all levels. We must work with them in any way we can to protect our environment and those entities that will provide jobs for our people. ——Melanie Allardale You can stlll REGISTER to vote for new COUNTY Robert Soldat Owner CVSR 2510 Moob, UT 84532 [801) 259-7638 COUNCIL members.
