Show Thursday, September 6, 1979 Lehi Free Press 'Set Seals' Says Lehi Residents Miss Rodeo Utah Injured In Labor Day Accident If you think that hi has a large chunk of the "Old West" action, then Des Cooper is star of the show! No, she doesn't resemble Calamity Jane; nor can she, like Annie Oakley, sling a six gun from the hip! She isn't in the same league as Belle Starr or Etta Place, but ask any young cowpoke in Lehi who Des Cooper is, and they'll tell you a thing or two. Des is a sweet gal who can ride an ornery horse. She wears leather boots and Levis, but she isn't the least bit bow-legge- She's as loyal as her favorite horse, Sporty Dude, and determinedly equal to any competitive situation. She's hitched her wagon to a star and won't quit until she's reached a handful of star-dus- t! She set a goal for herself as she grew up in a beautiful setting of a white Spanish house surrounded by rolling green hills with a stable of fine riding horses in the background. "I've wanted to be Miss Rodeo Utah for as long as I can remember," smiled the slender brunette, "and I've tried, with the help of my family, to participate in every worthwhile activity that would help me achieve my goal." She not only has the right scenery to be rodeo queen, but she's had a family of rodeo nuts around her. Gary, Des' dad, has been on the professional rodeo circuit as a rider and a clown. Her brother, Cam, was a pro in the world of rodeo before an untimely incident took his life, and another brother, Gary Allan, is both a rider and fan. Mother Bonnie, supports Des to the hilt and sister, Candace, is an equestrienne in her own right. She has also worn the robes of rodeo royalty. Des has come up through the ranks of high school cheerleading, high school and college rodeo queening where she won her share of titles, and added the "Miss Lehi" crown to her belt in 1977. She tried for and won the Miss Lehi Roundup tiara last spring and on July 21st she beat out a bunch of rodeo queens from throughout the state for the Miss Rodeo Utah title. Miss Rodeo America finals will be held in Oklahoma City November 27, and Des is practicing every day with coaching from Ken and Beth Cross of Basil J. Dorton, Desiree Cooper. Miss Rodeo Utah, stands by trailer which is inscribed with her name and title and which HER OWN TRAILER she can use throughout her reign. A I with new teachers in the Lehi schools. Her horse sense about clothes comes naturally. She's received a degree from Utah Technical College in fashion merchandising and works three days a week at Checkpoint, a popular fashion boutique in Orem. "I've really learned a lot about people working with the public. I've found out you have to have a lot of tolerance and patience whether you're in the mood or not. I've learned that patience helps in contesting, too." "I've had to learn to lose as well as to win and smile when I felt more like crying. "I really love Lehi. The people have been good to me. Donna and Mel Anderson, the Civic Improvement Association, I can't say enough about them. They are so cooperative and helpful. "I'm after the Miss Rodeo America title. I want it for me, sure, but most of all I want it for Lehi," and with a shy smile Des says, "most of all, I want it for my dad." There's a popular song called "Starshine" and a little bit of that shine rubs off every time Des makes an appearance. She has beauty, charisma, but most of all she cares. And the goals she has set for herself affect everybody she cares about in a very positive and happy way. Desiree Cooper, Miss Rodeo Utah, is reaching for the stars - and with Des, the sky's the limit. I've got to be ready to answer any type of question about rodeo, horses, or current events. I'm riding every strange horse available and practice every day. When I go to Oklahoma all I take with me is my personal gear. They furnish the horses and equipment, that's why it's important for me lo be able to handle unfamiliar horses." Des not only invested a lot of time in the queen's quest, she's readied a wardrobe of 10 to 15 outfits complete with hats, boots and gloves. "I have mine tailored by a friend and they still cost around $100 to $200 an outfit. If I had to buy them, it'd be more like $400 or $500." Page i Shopsmiiii Challenges You Technical College.
