Merle E. Harris, 45, of Bakersfield, was lifted off the mountainside at 8:01 a m. by a Hill Air Force Base helicopter crew and was flown to University Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He was hospitalized for a broken nose, exhaustion and other minor injuries. wind-swe- Utah County Sheriff Mack Holley said the dramatic rescue operation began Friday morning about 1 a m. when a search airplane manned by pilot Paul Kimmel of the Utah State Aeronautics Department, and Roy Hopkinson, Utah wing commander of the Civil Air Patrol, was making a last pass over the area and sighted the downed pilot. They spotted a small penlight being held by Harris and picked up "beeps" from the plane's emergency locator transmitter, a device carried by aircraft and set off by a crash. Sheriff Holley said search for the single-enginplane began Thursday afternoon about 3:30 p.m. after reports came into his office that aircraft flying over the Cedar Fort area picked up "beeps" from the transmitter. A check with Flight Service at the Salt Lake City International Airport showed a plane on a flight from Ogden to Tehachapi, Calif, (near Bakersfield) was overdue. The airplane had taken off from the Ogden Airport Wednesday about 8:45 p.m. and was last heard from at 8:51 p.m. The search was called off Thursday evening because of darkness but was resumed around midnight after the transmitter in the downed plane was first turned off and then on. "That turning off and on convinced us that someone was alive, so we got a helicopter back to the area," the sheriff said. Apparently the pilot turned the locator off when he couldn't hear search planes around him, then turned it back on. When a plane came over in the darkness, he signaled with his small flashlight. One helicopter crewman said the penlight gave off enough light that it "looked like a three cell flashlight in the snow." A Life Flight helicopter from L.D.S. Hospital in Salt Lake was called to the area but was unable to get in to the crash site because of turbulence. The five-ma- n helicopter crew from Detachment 4, 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, Hill Air Force Base, was then called out. Pararescue personnel, Sgt. Ward Warren and Staff Sgt. Raymond Picard, and a flight mechanic. Staff Sgt. Dan Wilder were set down with rescue equipment 600 feet above the crash slope. It took several other passes by the helicopter crew in what was described by crew members as "strong turbulence" before they were able to lower a rescue sling down to the ground crew and lift Harris into the chopper. The helicopter stopped to refuel at Salt Lake Airport No. 2, then took Harris to the University Medical Center. It returned to the crash site to pick up the other three crew members and the rescue equipment before returning to Hill Air Force Base. Harris, a former Air Force officer and Boy Scout leader, told rescue crew members he used the knowledge he had learned as a scout leader to stay alive. NOTICE meeting to organize Lehi's spring and mer r Christmas candy." He kept his hands and feet warm by drawing them one at a time inside his clothes as close to his body as he could. Weather in the area reached a chill factor of minus 70 degrees, it was reported. Harris told searchers he had taken the plane's emergency location transmitter and zipped it inside his coat in order that his body could keep the locator's batteries warm. This could extend the length of time the unit would broadcast and increase the strength of the radio signal. Participating in the rescue were members of the Utah County Sheriffs Office and Jeep Patrol, the Civil Air Patrol, the crew of Life Flight, and attendants at the airport and University Medical Center, as well as the Hill Air Force Base helicopter crew. Harris thanked them all for their help.
