Mrs. Nelson has served in many advisory positions in connection with education, including Reading Council, Advisory Vocational and Education Technical It's finally time to talk about my name...the last half of it especially. What could be more fun than a last name like Radish? I've been trying to find a man named Jack Patch. We could marry and I would become Kris Radish Patch... now that would be more fun. Radish is my for real name. It wasn't until I graduated from college that anyone called me Kris. It was always just RADISH. If you call me Kris and I hesitate, it's because I'm still not used to it. Sometimes when I meet someone who has been reading this or following column, some of my other writing, they reply. .."Why, I thought Kris Radish was a man." "I give them a big old thousand dollar smile and say..."Honey, no man could write that well." Enough said. You grow up tough with a last name like this. But, not too many people messed with our bunch. We were quite quick witted...were, I mean Protection Youth Committee. Why no one ever took to calling me Krisp...m never know. My dad likes to call me Kris Ann.. .my little cousins call me Krissy, and I won't even mention what my bad friends say. Near as I can figure, the name was changed years ago. My father's side of the family tells such tales...some people call it something else, it's hard to tell. Something to do about discrimination and the Polish and the Germans down on the docks in Milwaukee. Well, whichever great what changed it, thanks. I sure have a blast with it. The telephone operators love it..."Could you spell your last name please." "Yes, that's Radish just like the vegetable." "Are you kidding?" And the joke continues. Besides having a face no one could forget, it's nice to have a different name. In my line of business that's good. I hate to get lost in crowds. ..being tall helps too.. .all those roots. Gosh, maybe that's why I'm still single. I mean, who wants to be a Smith or a Gregory or a Jones when you have been a Radish all your life. That's quite a transplant. But.. .if I married a Smith, I'd be Mrs. Kris Smith.. .say that faster please. Enough said. A Lehi native, Ray, as he is known to his many friends and relatives, was born April 19, 1905. As a boy he spent his vacations from school helping his father on the farm and doing construction work. After all these years, he still farms and maintains a beautiful garden. During his school days he developed a very low bass voice and with the help of Abe Anderson and his wife, he enjoyed singing throughout the state. He was also a member of the Lehi Silver Band. His love for the band still is evident. He furnished the fine team of horses which pulled the bandwagon on its many trips to parades and other celebrations. He filled a mission and during this time he spent seven months as a guide in the Arizona Temple prior to its dedication. He married Phoebe Alice Sabey who was born October 6, 1906.
