Show V you wouldn't be here doing a story on me," she said. Terrie goes to all the home games and when Gary is away she listens to the games oo the radio. "I do get nervous and 'pace the floor" when I listen and think about all the things that could happen to Gary," she said, "but I never thought I would like the game as much as I do." Even though she is heavily involved with her husbands football career, Terrie says she still has maintained her own identity. "I went to Weber State and have developed many talents and interests on my own so that I can have my own identity," she explained. Time for herself is important and Terrie has developed friends and interests outside the football and wrestling world. TERRIE PETERSEN is the wife of a football hero, but she's still her own person. Tcrris Petersen ssys: When You're the Wife Of a Football Star Life is Exciting by Kris Radish Terrie Peterson doesn't let footballs and wrestling mats get in her way. She's still her own person even though her life is with surrounded shouting fans and a heavy playing schedule. Terrie, 21, is the wife of Gary Petersen, star defensive tackle for BYU's football team and heavyweight champion wrestler. The Petersens live in Lehi and Terrie works full time as a sales clerk at Leany's Clothing and Appliance Store on Main Street in Lehi. Her husband is a busy man and if things go the way they are supposed to he will be even busier. Gary, 22, is a senior at BYU and he has been scouted by almost every professional football team in the United States. "I'm excited if thats what he wants to do," Terrie said. "I don't say much because it's his decision but I think it would be exciting to travel and see the country and meet new people," she said. According to Terrie, Gary has received the most information from the DaUas Cowboys but he is keeping in touch with several other teams. Life with a football hero is fun, Terrie says, but the hard times equal all the fun and exciting times. "Lots of people think it's really neat to be married to a big hero," Terrie stated, "but sometimes it's really hard." She said Gary has been going to school at BYU under a full scholarship and because of that he can only work in the summer. "That puts a big financial burden on me," she explained. "I don't mind working but if he could do something during the school year it would relieve a lot of mental tension that I have because of finances." Despite the financial burden she says she still enjoys her life. "After all if it weren't for my husband semi-glamoro- "I need my own life also and interest outside of. my husband," Terrie said. "Lots of girls have images of living happily ever after in this kind of situation and one way to do that is to develop your own interests." Gary and Terrie do many things together. They both hunt and fish and ski in the winter, and Terrie says she enjoys homemaking skills as much as all her outdoor hobbies. She said everything in her marriage "balances out" and she has not had too many surprises. "Football comes first in Gary's life right now and as a wife you simply have to accept that and make some allowances," she said. "I don't feel that I have sacrificed that much, in fact many women have to sacrifice much more than I have," Terrie added. Despite her need for a separate life with separate interests, Terrie enjoys the time she spends at the games and with other players wives and families. "It's fun to sit at the games with the rest of the players relatives and root on the team," she explained. "When you sit in a bunch like that you feel like the rest of the crowd, rather than like the wife of Gary Petersen." Even though Gary's future with a professional team is almost insured the Petersen's aren't counting on it. "At this point we aren't planning on the pro's," she said. "We do have other things in our lives and Gary could have a good future in the construction business."
