Did you know that in 1866 Lehi Ward, in response to a call from church authorities, sent several teams and oxen to the Missouri River to meet the poor? Lehi's ambassadors of goodwill were: T. R. Jones, Alfred Fox, Thomas Trane, John Walton, Nels Down, William Simmons, Christian Nelson, and James Dawson. Did you know that Brigham Young on September 4, 1865, along with Ezra T. Benson, Lorenzo Snow, Charles C. Rich, and George Q. Cannon, visited Lehi to give the Saints incentive to endure the treatment afforded them by Federal judges and the Army? Did you know that the Liberals of Lehi held their first political meeting in the home of James Harris on September 22, 1882? Did you know that after a fistfight over controversial water rights in Lehi, Brigham Young was called in to settle the dispute? And did you know that on Tuesday, December 7, 1886, "several houses were raided by U.S. deputy marshails who arrested Bishop Thomas R. Cutler, Edward Standering, his first counselor; James Kirkham, ward clerk; John S. Givv, Samuel Jones, John Hart, and William Yates, all on charges of unlawful cohabitation." All but Jones and Hart eventually served prison terms. Shortly thereafter, the membership records show several removals from Lehi to Magrath, Canada, and Morales, Mexico. by Robert Warden Ed. Note - Robert Warden, a native of Iowa, graduated from college with a degree in business management, and managed a hotel chain in Alaska. After joining the LDS Church there, and wanting to change his life style, he moved to Salt Lake City, where he is now continuing his studies with sis on history and historical writing. He is also doing professional genealogical research on a part time basis in association with Mrs. Harvard Hinton of Lehi. They were not found in old newspapers files. The stories which go with them were taken from the Lehi Ward Records at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints Historian's Office, along with many other records containing both historical and geanealogical information. A trip to this office and the Genealogical Society in the Church Office Building reveals a storehouse of information of interest to the to the present citizens of Lehi. Since the history of Lehi and the history of the Mormon Church here begin simultaneously, much of the exciting local color, background to decisions made, and thoughts and hopes of pioneer Lehi citizens are recorded in the minutes of the various church organizations. For example, in scanning the Relief Society records of the 1870's, the spirituality and character of these women is evident. Their worries and problems concerning their families were similar to those of today's sisters. In September of 1879, Relief Society President R. Standering warned the women about the danger of sending young girls to Salt Lake for hire "just for the purpose of getting fine clothes," because there they would be faced with ' temptations that would be hard to resist. She further counseled them to spend their time reading good books and to remember that they had higher aims in life than frivolities of dress and passion. Two months later, Sister Ellen Clark bore her testimony about the proposed Relief Society silkworm project in these words: "I will be happy to assist in working with these silkworms. At first I thought it not very pleasant work, but the more I have to do with the little worms, the better, IJike theraThese records also contain many stirring testimonies of faith in Jesus Christ and of confidence in the Saint's ultimate triumph over the land which mnriorn-Ha- v of ran turn fn as- n snurrp j cictprs .. inspiration. "I am hiding in the hills. Keep the faith in j my absence." These and other messages are contained in a letter from the first bishop of Lehi, David Evans, to his brother and the Lehi priesthood. In it he urges restraint by the Saints in the face of persecution and I misunderstanding by Federal officials. Many other recorded speeches of early Lehi church leaders offer similar advice. ? Many interesting items of history are to be found in the Elder's Quorum minutes. For example, did you know that the founding of Lehi on Dry Creek was the second choice of early settlers, who found American Fork - noons." The Young Ladies Retrenchment Society, forerunner to the YWMIA, whose first president was Orinda Davis, was formed in 1875. A primary interest of this group was obtaining speakers of reknown on scientific and other enlightening subjects. Several interesting letters between this society and potential speakers are on film. On one occasion, the guest speaker for the young ladies was Elder James E. Talmadge, who was so effective that immediately thereafter a petition was sent to him from the young men's organization inviting him to speak. His speech to both groups was on the "Birth and Growth of the Did you know that the town of Lehi was laid out by Bishop Evans with a carpenter's rule and a pocket compass in 1851? uia you Know tnai in ism, wmie sun struggling to establish themselves as a town, - t U .Un Tt,nmnn -- tn tririia' Pnnntp Pprprcnn In Qran. inoham o i nomas m ipvac enr nana via ana a nunurcu anu iweniy lour years Leni nas cuiiiuiueu iu scniu imasiuiiai ica an uvci inc world. It is also surprising that we can find judges who are more than happy to travel to Lehi and donate a day of their time for this contest, when the citizens of our city are not willing to make a phone call and spend half an hour to support this contest. It is for this reason that we have decided to open this contest to our neighboring towns, effective April 9th, if no greater response is made. I'm sure we have enough children within Lehi for a baby n n reign over the Roundup Days Parade as Jr. Royalty. Do you want an out - of - town child as Lehi Royalty? It's up to you! You can register your child at the Lehi Free Press Office Lake City with first contestant being awarded $200 towards the school and second attendant a $100 scholarship. Every contestant in the pageant will receive a $50 scholarship to the Barbi-zoSchool. Miss Lehi 1976 will also be furnished with a $100 wardrobe to compete in the Miss Utah Pageant. This should excite any young girl in Lehi to become a contestant in the pageant. Another exciting event for the girls was last Saturday, April 3rd, the girls and their n.others were guests at a tea at ie LaCasa Supper Club. n The contest will be held at the Memorial Building on April 13th according to the following schedule: Birth to six months, girls, 9:00 a.m. Boys, 9:30 a.m. Six months to one year, girls, 10:00a.m. Boys, 10:30a.m. One year to two year, girls, 11:00a.m. Boys, 11:30. Beauty pageants have evolved through a half century to become as familiar in the lore of America as mother's homemade apple pie. Years ago, the crown of Miss America was coveted by young women thrilled with the fame and glamor of being selected as the most beautiful and charming girl in the nation. The shimmer of fame and glamor still shines brightly for those seeking any crown, but now most girls are seeking the scholarship benefits awarded. The Miss Lehi Pageant should actually be called the Miss Lehi Scholarship Pageant. Miss Lehi 1976 will receive a $100 scholarship contributed by the State Bank of Lehi and a $250 scholarship from the pageant. will receive Both runners-u- p $100 scholarships from the pageant to be used at the school of her choosing. For the genealogist, the complete membership records of the ward are available in both the Genealogical Society and the Church Historian's Office. An excellent index compiled by Andrew Field and complete through 1903, was completed in 1928 under the direction of Stake President Carlos Schow. These records are of baptisms, rebaptisms (city, county, and state of birth of person baptized, when and by whom blessed, when and by whom baptized), all persons received into the church from elsewhere, members who removed from the church to other locations, marriages confirmed by the church, and, finally, all persons cut off from the church. However, the earliest membership records are not as detailed. The first Entry shows a Rapleye child who was blessed in Lehi sometime in the 1850's, followed sometime later by the son of a Tunis and Johanne in February, 1856. No other information was given. By 1860, however, these records give detailed information on all persons. Several hundred rebaptisims were performed in the 1870's and 1880's for the purpose of rededication and reconsecration. These are important genealogical records because they give the date, place, and name of person performing the original baptism. Many early Lehi settlers were originally baptized by such men as Joseph Smith, Jr., Oliver Cowdry, Hiram Smith, and Parley P. Pratt. The aforementioned Narrative History of Lehi Ward has the chronological record of all officers of the ward. Glancing through the pages of these various church records, one can see the family histories of many of the present citizens of Lehi. Recorded there are the names of Ashton, Rhodes, Peterson, Evans, Downs, Singleton, Price, Coleman, Bushman, Goates, Trinnaman, Taylor, College, Southwick, Fox, and Welles. Poor Response to By Jean Hatch We regretfully report that the response to the Baby Contest has been very poor. We feel the current number of applicants does not even merit a contest at all. It's too bad that we, as a community, do not show enough interest to support the activities provided for us.
