Lehi's Beautification Committee led by Julian Mercer, has planned an all out campaign to clean up, paint up and fix up the community so as to put Lehi's best foot forward for the bicentennial year. Mr. Mercer wishes to remind citizens that items and trash are to be out on curb and trucks will be available for the pickup and hauling. Each resident is to be responsible for his yard work and cleanup. Each individual yard and home contributes to the appearance of the community as a whole and the cooperation of each citizen is requested. In accordance with beautification efforts, the caretakers at th; City Building have again extended many hours of work and care to set the pace for the town. The beautiful grounds of the Memorial Building are an example for each of Lehi's citizens and homeowners to follow. The following letter from tourists visiting Lehi was received at the city office this week and should be an incentive for all during the cleanup campaign: p Dear Mr. Mayor: Just a note to let you know how impressed we were with the floral design and beauty of your city grounds or Municipal Buildings (whatever they are called). We were passing through on a Trailways Bus, on a 60 day tour of the U.S.A. and have seen nothing lovlier in any city (large or small). It has been one of the highlights of our memorable trip. If we are ever by Lehi again we will surely stop by and shake the hands of the staff members who do such a wonderful job. Mr. and Mrs. Jay McDonald, San Bernadino, Calif, and many members of the church group who were with us feel the same way. We have been to a few larger cities such as Salt Lake City, Houston, Texas; New Orelans, La.; Talahassee, Fl.; Miami, Fl.; Tampa, Fl.; Nashville, Tenn.; San Antonio, Texas; Gal While automobiles were invented in Europe, it was American ingenuity that made them practical through mass production. veston, Texas; Mobile, Ala.; Orlando, Fl.; Key West, Fl.; Montgomery, Ala. It is projected that within three to six years it will be necessary to build second new elementary schools in both Orem and American Fork, a second addition to one of the elementary schools in Pleasant Grove and a new elementary school in Lehi. Within three to six years it will be necessary to build a second senior high school in Orem and to make an extensive addition to American Fork High School. The total known construction costs at today's prices to build these buildings is some $15,000,000. The present bond calls for a $12,000,000 bond authorization; this amount falls far short of providing the known needs of the district, but it is the legal limit to which the district can bond over the next five years. The board of education does not propose to increase the mill levy for construction purposes if the bond issue passes. Currently the staff of the board of education is making slide presentations to all interested groups on the purposes for the bond and the housing needs of the district. Director of Public Relations Jess R. Walker is in charge of scheduling these slide presentations and will be happy to schedule presentations for all groups that contact him.
