Show THE LEHI FREE PRESS. THURSDAY. JANUARY 31. Springville Red Devils Ambush Pioneers 71-6- 2 The first quarter was all Lehi as the Pioneers jumped to an early 10 to 4 lead. Lehi's zone was effective and with Chris Lind and Dennis Beck providing the early fire power the Pioneers looked unbeatable. Chris scored 8 points and Dennis 6 in the first quarter. Midway through the first quarter Springville started to find some holes in the Lehi zone and started to creep back. The first quarter ended with Lehi up by five, 19 to 14. Springville used a man to man full court press through most of the game, which caused some minor problems. Springville had done their homework well as the second quarter got underway they started to pick Lehi's zone apart. Christensen (known mainly for his shooting and muscle) hit some outside shots from the overload, then Mike North from the other side. With 5:37 left the Devils were up by five, 36 to 21. The Devils continued to be impressive as they took away the Lehi fast break and moved out to a nine point halftime lead 38 to 29. The second half saw the Pioneers start with a 2 2 1 full court press that caused some 11 or 12 turnovers during the quarter. Lehi crept back to within four points at one point with scoring from all five players and good hustle on defense. Jon North, the fine guard from Springville, along with Newton and Rife carried most of the Devil's third quarter spark. The third quarter ended with the Devils up by a 61 to 51 count. The Pioneers gave it all they had in the fourth quarter, but cold shooting and maybe pushing a little too hard as they I J made a number of costly turnovers going down to the wire. The final eight minutes proved to be a stand off as the final ended with Springville up by nine, 71 to 62. and second place in Region 6. by Serge Nelsw PlOllCCrS Jeff Peterson Mr Hustle on the basektball floor and a particularly hard nosed defensive player throughout the past two years is Jeff Peterson.
