Safety Council's Vice President for Traffic, warning Utah drivers that plenty of rough winter drivtie-up- ing lies ahead. "We are in the deepest part of the winter, and weary motorists still have plenty of tough driving to face," he said. "Now is the time to look back at what we did wrong and try to do better when the next storm hits." He reported that stalled cars clogged streets, hindering snow removal and salting operations. This could result in fire, police, ambulance and other emergency services being knocked out of commission because some dri vers don't yet know how to keep their cars in shape for winter driving nor how to drive under severe conditions. "Much of the trouble came from drivers who are ignorant of basic winter driving rules and skills," Barlow said. He asked motorists to review the following winter driving tips: 1. Get the "feel" of the road. Accelerate carefully to see if wheels spin easily; or brake gently to see if they skid. Reduce speed accordingly. 2. Increase your following distance. It takes three to nine times as far to stop on snow and ice as on dry pavement. 3. "Pump' yourbrakestoslow or stopdon't jam them on.
