UTAH STATE TRAINING SCHOOL RESIDENTS PARTICIPATING Research Project Shorn "HIP" Program Beneficial at State Training School research paper prepared by four University of Utah grad uate students shows that Utah State Training School residents participating In the school's Hospital Improvement Project (HIP) have progressed faster in the area of selfcare skills than a matched group of children of similar ability and background. The residents were viewed over a period beginning in October of 1968. The study was concluded at the first of April. , The study was made by Ruth- ann Bleyl, Kenneth Kleven, Gary Peterson, William Robert Long and Paul Thorpe in partial fulfillment of the requirements' for 'their degree of Master of Social Work. It was under the direction of Dr. William M. McPhee, chairman of the faculty supervisory committee. Mr. Long, who served as chairman of the study group, noted that the evaluation was made in the areas of walking, talking, feeding, toileting, dressing and playing. The group's performance was compared to its performance at the beginning of the program as A six-mon- th well as with the matched group of children. The study showed that before coming into the HIP program, 73 per cent of the children could feed themselves. After six months, 100 per cent of those participating were able to feed themselves in comparison to 64 per cent in the matched group. Walking97 per cent of the HIP children could walk by themselves when they came into the HIP program with 100 per cent able to walk after six months. This compared to 91 per cent in the matched group. Fourteen per cent of the childd when they ren were entered the HIP program. After six months, 41 per cent were toilet-trainin comparison to 12 per cent of the matched group.
