Show Intensive Care Unit Opens At American Fork Hospital An intensive care unit designed to provide constant specialized nursing care for acutely ill or Injured persons or coronary patients has ben opened at the American Fork Hospital The four-be- d unit is staffed on a basis by Registered Nurses who have completed specialized intensive care training Including special training on emergency measures to be taken If needed In caring for heart patients, critically injured or acutely ill persons. The unit is equipped with sen- sitive monitoring units which 24-ho- ur constantly measure patients' heart stimulus through the use of electrodes. These electrodes are taped to the chest of the intensive care patient and are sensitive enough to pick up electrical stimulus of the heart, re laying this to a small monitoring screen. The heart stimulus is then recorded on both individual mon itors located above each bed and on a central monitor situated on the nurses' charting desk, alert ing nursing personnel if "trouble" of some type develops Officials stressed that these electrodes are lightweight and provide no discomfort to the patients. There is no electrical charge of any kind felt in con nection with them, they said. The central monitoring system is equipped with an alarm system which serves as a "double alert" in warning personnel if a patient needs im All of the mediate attention. equipment works automatically. Also located in the intensive care unit is a" crash cart" equipped with various types of emergency equipment and drugs. Dr. Guy Richards is staff doctor in charge of the unit. Mary Lou Moody, day shift nurse, recently completed an intensive care training course at the University of Utah Medical Center and has given this training to Rhea Pulham, M. LaTron-ic- o, and Martha Pantos. Arlene Hobbs, is currently completing a course at the Medical Center. All registered nurses, they will serve in the Intensive Care Unit. Mrs. Moody noted that there is one registered nurse on each shift, thus maintaining constant supervision by a professional nurse... "the patients are never left alone," she said. The Intensive,.Care unit was equipped through hospital employees donating one days' wages to purchase the necessary specialized equipment, Wayne R. Mc- - Tague, hospital administrator, said. Cost was approximately $10,000. Previously, acutely ill patients had to be transferred to either Salt Lake or Provo hospitals to be cared for and officials feel the new Intensive Care unit will be a "life-savinaddition to the community in that these patients can receive the specialized care they need immediately. g" VISITORS LIMITED Hospital officials stressed that visitors to the patients in the Intensive Care Unit will be limited to immediate family members only. These may visit but each visiting hour and then only if the nurse in charge feels that the patients' condition warrants visiting privileges. Due to limited space, no floral pieces will be allowed in the unit. Officials suggest that if you wish to send flowers to patients in the intensive care unit, you send them to his home or wait until he (or she) is moved into a regular ward. Charles Porter Attending New Mexico U. Charles James Porter, Lehi, among 35 teachers from 16 states attending the National is Science Foundation-supporte- d Summer Institute for Teachers of Secondary Mathematics at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque during the summer. The Summer Institute this year is one of a sequence of four leading to a MA degree in teaching of mathematics. About 10 of the participating teachers will complete degree requirements this summer. UNM plans to have a continuation of the program next summer for a group of 50 students. Students in the Institute study advanced mathematics designed as a background for their own teaching and education courses in methods of teaching mathematics in secondary schools. '69 Wool Incentive Price Raises 2c The incentive price for shorn wool marketed in 1969 will be two cents a pound more than the 1968 level, according to Claude Hunting, Chairman, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee. The U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced a shorn wool incentive price of 69 cents a pound, the Chairman said. The support price for mohair will be 77.4 cents a pound, the same as for the 1968 marketings. The price of pulled wool will be supported at a level comparable to the incentive price for shorn wooL The Chairman reminded producers that shorn wool payments will be equal to a percentage of each producer's returns from sales. The percentage will be that required to raise the national average price received by all producers from shorn wool during 1969 up to the announced 69 cents a pound incentive price. Mohair payments will be determined in a similar manner. The wool payment program was initiated as the most practical method of supporting producers' wood prices, thereby increasing income with the goal of a continuing domestic production of wool. The support program will be carried out under the National Wool Act of 1954, as amended by the Food and Agriculture Act of 1965, which extends the Wool and mohair payment program through 1969 and prescribes a formula which sets the support price for wool. Payments to producers on the 1969 calendar year marketing will be made beginning in April 1970, with applications for such payments being filed not later than January 31, 1970. 1969 Approves Yearly Budget Mr. and Mrs. Mike Seaman (Patricia Penrod) and daughter Gidget, are now members of the Lehi Second Ward.
