SIGNS Lehi High School Observes Freedom Week The observance of Freedom Week at the Lehi High School was very successful, it was re- ported by school officials. The idea for the program came through Studentbody President Stan Lewis as an outgrowth of the Freedom Academy he attended last summer. The Academy is sponsored annually by the Utah National Guard and each school is invited to send one Iff SV , j the need for repair of the basement of the Memorial Building for the use of the American Legion and veterans. The Legion has worked out a material list and had prices on the materials for the work. The materials were for the large room. Ceiling materials would be approximately $892.00. Doors, wiring, windows, etc. would amount to $375.00, and paneling for the walls would be $270.00. Floor tile would amount to $691.76. It was agreed that Mr. Cooper will review the lists and the building budget to see what can be done at present and will make his recommendations at the next council meeting. representative. The week's activities began on Monday with an oratory contest and students beging urged to write poetry, essays, themes and short stories on freedom. Each class created a bulletin board and recordings were played over the intercom by various students and faculty members about freedom. Home room discussions were held and announcements about the program were carried by radio stations. Tuesday was the deadline for written entries and a report by students on freedom was aired on Public Pulse on KSL. Students were encouraged to wear clothing in red, white and or blue. On Wednesday all high school boys attended a Selective Service assembly and the girls listened to Rose Marie Reid, Thursdays ob'servance was highlighted by a flag ceremony on the school lawn, which all students attended. The band played patriotic selections. On Friday the school newspaper was published with the best poems, essays, themes and stories. The winners of the oratory contest were announced as Esther Evans, first; Sherrie Olsen, second; Maurine Nelson, third; and Julie Comer, fourth. Climax of the week's activities was a Freedom Assembly, at which Mayor Calvin Swenson spoke. Throughout the week students were Invited to sign a petition to be sent to General Westmoreland. The petition reads: "The Associated students of Lehi High School officially proclaim their support to the combined Armed Forces of the United States of America for their valiant and heroic efforts In suppressing Communist aggression In South Viet Nam." The petition carries 436 of the 558 students' signatures. r. Lehi City and the Lehi Chamber of Commerce are cooperating in this annual project. Christmas lighting and decorations will be judged according to originality and theme, as well as the overall effect, according to Melvin Anderson, Chamber president, who is serving as lighting chairman. It is not always the most elaborate arrangement which wins the prize, is stressed. Everyone who puts up Christmas lights Is urged to register for the contest, and every family is encouraged to place some type of lighting or decoration. Santa Claus will be here again on Saturday, Dec. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Memorial Building. Boys and girls may call in and talk with him and receive a bag of goodies. FLOOD CONTROL Carolyn Kleinman Opens New Beauty Salon in Lehi Mrs. Don Kleinman (Carolyn Sanders) is announcing the opening of a beauty shop at her home, 807 North Second West, in Lehi. She will operate under the trade name, "Carolyn's Shoppe of Beauty." Mrs. Kleinman is a graduate of "Mary's Career College of Beauty," and was employed for a time in Mary Kawakama'sshop in American Fork. She is trained and experienced in all types of beauty work, including hair cutting. Mrs. Kleinman comes from La Verkin, Washington County, Utah, a daughter of Mrs. C. W. Sanders.
