Division of Preventive Medicine ' and Medical Facilities. ' Jill four of the reported plague victims are Indian children from different locations on the reservation who are believed to have had contact with wild rodents prior to their illnesses. Accord tag to a Communicable Disease Crater Morbidity and Mortality Report, field investigations car ried out in one of the areas reporting plague revealed exces -has sive prairie dog mortality. Upon further examination by the laboratory, the prairie dogs proved to be infected by the plague organism. , Since plague is primarily a disease of rodents transmitted by rat fleas, man's role in the transmission at the disease Is unusual and considered to be accidental. Plague is caused by bacteria (Pas-esmall in the diseased animal's bloodstream.) The flea obtains a blood meal from a diseased rodent. The bacteria then multiply in the gut of the flea and are regurgitated as the flea bites the next victim. When the rat dies of the plague, the fleas leave the dead animal to go in search of another host. If the fleas cannot find another rodent, they sometimes bite man, who in turn may become infected with plague. Plague is rapidly coming under control even in counties such as India, Burma and Viet Nam where rod-shap- ed nt it has for centuries been a serious health problem. Where the serious epidemics have occurred the infection has been found in rats which live in close association with humans. In the United States, plague is found in wild rodents such as squirrels, chipmunks andpralrle dogs. Plague in man in the United States, therefore is limited to rare instances of exposure to infected wild rodents or their fleas. Human cases are often des cribed in two clinical forms: First the more common bubonic plague with acutely inflamed and painful swelling of tne regional lymph nodes which drain the site of the infection most commonly in the groin and under the arms. Toxemia, high fever, shock, dropping blood pressure, rapid and Irregular pulse, staggering gait, mental confusion, prostration, delirium and coma are all symptoms of the disease.
