PO West, Provo. Phone FR Fire Destroys New Home of Holindrakes -tf er y Cooperation should be a proposition. It usually is. But to the state road commission, cooperation seems to mean little on their part. In the midst of much opposition from Lehi residents, the state chose to construct the free-wa- y right through the center of the city isolating much of the residential area and reducing the value of many homes and acreages especially those lying between the railroad tracks and freeway. They took out over 30 homes, which is an unhealthy condition for any community, and reduced the property value of many others. They reduced the access roads to the Fourth Ward area of the city. They did all this with very little opposition from property owners who were willing to accept the state's offer in the interest of progress. The freeway route was established, homes have been moved, and construction on the freeway through the center of Lehi is progressing at a rapid pace. Many residents are not too happy with the route, but are accepting it because there is very little that can be done. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Lehi is asking for a little cooperation from the state road commission in return. The state owns approximately one acre of ground about mile south of the north interchange. The Lehi Chamber of Commerce approached the state road commission the first part of 1961 and asked to purchase this acre plot as a site for a modern motel Every city in the state are vieing for new businesses, and Lehi is no exception. The road commission refused to sell the property or exchange it for an equal piece of property to the south. Lehi feels keenly the need for a motel and has pleaded with the state for reconsideration of their negative action. A recent letter from the state reconfirming its former decision to retain the property. If they were to present one valid reason for use of the 'property, we would be the first to respect their decision and abandon the idea. But we have read all correspondence from the road department and still fail to see any realistic reason why they should refuse to place this property back on the tax rolls, as well as aid Lehi in securing a motel which is so badly needed. We hope the state road commission will yet take a last long look at the situation and act in favor of releasing this small portion of ground for the construction of a motel in Lehi. It seems little enough to expect the state road commission to reciprocate in cooperating with the City of Lehi when we have cooperated to FOR SALE One mahogany desk such an extent with them in their efforts. The Lehi Free Press . I A man who hoped to make a fortune by transporting "gold rushers" from Missouri to California was one of those who foresaw the value of Utah as a transportation center. In 1850 Col. I. M. Estill proposed making Utah the headquarters of a stage and mail line operating between Missouri and San Francisco. He planned to make the trip twice a week for five months of the year. His coaches would carry 75 passengers for $250 each and he hoped the Government would pay for hauling mail. In an attemept to convince backers of the need for his service Col. Estill did establish the Estill Express which carried some mail between lonely wives in the east and gold seekers in California. Some of these letters now arc prized as "collector items." Travel has always been important to Utah and whenever people are on the go they like to stop in clean surroundings.
