Eight Lehi Literary Clubs Participate in Tour of Utah County Youth Home Last Thursday About a hundred persons from Lehi took a tour of the Youth Home last Thursday evening. Eight clubs weie represented, with several guests in the large group. It was one of the largest club groups the Youth Home officials had ever had in attendance, and they expressed amazement at the keen interest displayed. Clubs attending were the Athenian, Liahonian, Serimpian, Olympian, Thalian, Auctus, Lehila and Leity Literary Clubs. Mrs. Lyean (Seytha) Johnson, chairman of the Youth Home Board, introduced Judge Paxman of the Third District Court, who explained the functions of the home. It was designed both for the detention of juvenile delinquents, vagrants, and incorrigibles for the protection of society and also for the protection of certain children from some segments of society. Diagnostic and therapy-woris performed there for disturbed and wiling children also. The average stay is four and a half days, although it sometimes serves as a temporary home for welfare children until they are established in foster homes. The home is one of the best in the United States. Eight judges from juvenile courts from the states say it is an outstanding family type home, unique in its feeling for children and the handling of them, and it is serving as an example for other youth homes which have been built since. These judges have asked permission for return visits for further studies. The building is made entirely of concrete, the walls, floors, ceilings and all. There is a spacious, beautiful living room with fireplace, modern design throughout the building, an efficient and sparkling kitchen and laundry room, shower rooms and bathrooms, and seventeen sleeping units, besides sleeping quarters for the officials of the home. There is a boys and girls wing and a ward, although the officals prefer to keep each child segregated in his own quarters for sleeping. There is another living room on the girls side of the buildng. All the rooms are tastefully furnished and decorated, with colorful curtains and furniture. This home serves the needs of six counties which come under the jurisdiction of the Third District Court. These are Millard, Juab, Wasatch, Utah, Tooele and Uinta counties. The staff of the Youth home are Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Baxter, "father" and "mother" of the delinquents while they are housed there; Mrs. Eddie Kimball, a full time teacher especially appointed by the district school board; Mr. Ward, a probation officer; Glen Freeman, a psychologist. Serving on the board with Mrs. Johnson are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Huish. secretaries of the board, Lloyd Whitlock, Loveil Bennett, Harold Holley and Commissioner Robert N'icholes. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter are highly praised for their understanding of children and the fine job they are doing at the horns1. They live right at the home a. id are on duty night and day. Children released from the home olten write them and come back to see them. Mrs. Kimball, the teacher, said that reading was the biggest problem with most of them. She works to help them enjoy reading more, along with instilling a sense of moral responsibility. She uses a philosophical approach to accomplish this and also uses handicraft lessons to help children find confidence in themselves as useful persons. Many examples of crocheted handwork, including rugs, knitted hats, embroidery work and copper tooling were dis- played, as were examples of drawings and art work. The home takes children from cradle age to seventeen years old. Parents of the children must have special permission from the juvenile court to visit them. One of the chief needs of the home at the recrepresent time is a fenced-in- ational area or visiting grounds, where the children might get outdoors more. Because there is no fence at present, children are compelled to remain inside even in hot weather, as officials cannot trust them not to run away. Some children have escaped supervision from time to time but are usually caught and brought back to the home in a short time. Those who cannot be handled in any other way are eventually sent to the industrial school.
