Show LEHI FREE PRESS, LEHI, UTAH THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 1855 II Immunizalion Cited as Important Weapon Against Preventable Ills One of the vital defnse mea sures recommended by Civil Defense Leaders is a widespread protection of all our population against preventable diseases. Inis has recently been stressed by the Utah County Medical Society and by State and Local Public Health Officials in connection with Civil ian Defense. In harmony with these recom mendations we are strongly urg ing the adults of our community to take steps at once to become immunized against Typhoid Fever, Small Pox and Tetanus. Parents children of infants and should see that their children are protected against such diseases as Whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Tetanus and Small Pox. Children above two years of age should be inoculated against Typhoid Fever. The immunizations that we may receive against these preventable diseases is doubly urgent at this pre-scho- ol time. We are recommending that you arrange with your family Physician, at once, to obtain this protection for yourselves and your A widespread immunichildren. zation program is being carried on each year in the schools 1 throughout the county to protect the school children. However, this does not protect the pre school child or the adult. Im munization for infants may begin as early as four to eight weeks. After this is completed in the in fant, they should have a "booster" for Diphtheria, Whooping Cough and Tetanus at about eighteen nwaiths and one at least at three Typhoid "boost year intervals. ers" should be given every two years. Vaccination for Small Pox should be repeated every five years. Health DeThe partment is cooperating with the local communities with the Immunization Clinics which are held monthly in Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Orem and Payson. Weekly clincis are held in Provo. Adults are woefully negligent about getting Tetanus protection. Tetanus (Lockjaw) is a very serious and usually fatal disease and can very easily be acquired by even a small Injury. This could be prevented by being immunized against Tetanus before the injury occurs. All men who have been in the Armed Services of the United States have been protected by immunization against Tetanus with Tetanus Toxoid, but they should maintain their protection by a booster shot every three or four years. All adults should be properly protected by immunization against Tetanus. Call your family Physician as to the best program of immunization for you and your family to follow. By all means do not fail to get the protection needed for you and your children at this time. City-Coun- ty , Mr. C. M. Smith, M. D. . ft, Director. T The Central Utah Vocational with the School, in cooperation Utah Valley Hospital, offers an accredited course in Practical Nursing to the women of this community. This program is approved by our state and also by the National Association for Practical Nurse Education. This is a 12 months course with one month vacation. Students spend 17 weeks in class and laboratory practice at the school and 30 weeks in supervised practice in the hospital, students receive a stipend which totals to $675.00. Thus, they earn while they learn. Two classes are enrolled each year, one in March and one in September. The next class will register on March 4, with instruction to begin March 7. Since only a limited number of students can be accepted, applications for the March class should be made immediately. Today, there is a shortage of nurses, not because their number is fewer, but because the demand for their services is greater than ever before. There are many reasons for this; among them, our aging population, the current birth rate, and the increased ability to pay for the hospital services. All these have combined to put a strain on nursing facilities and made an increased number of nurses essential to the health of our communities and nation. To help solve this vital problem, practical nursing schools have been established. Practical nursing is now recognized as a for definite vocation, calling specific skills and knowledge for which the worker must be prepared. These programs are open to women from 17 to 50. They a real opportunity for the young student who does not go on to college and the thousands of qualified women in the older age brackets.
