Show THTESDAT, JVLt 14, UU Third Ward Wins First Half Church Senior Softball Title Stake Primary The Third Ward Softball team, managed by Lester Colledge, Sr., came through the first half of the local Senior Softball schedule without losing a game Coach Dean Prior reported, although the Second Ward in the final game of the first half gave them plenty of trouble before losing 6 to 5. A loss for the Third Ward would have tied Third and Fourth Ward teams. With Jay Manning coming through as relief to veteran Lester Colledge, Jr.. on the mound and with Roy Turner delivering the single to score Grace with the winning run, the Third again demonstrated that they wanted the title badly enough to put forth a little effort when it meant the most to them. Roberts pitched a strong game for Second, but failure to hit with men on bases cost Second the The chance to pull an upset Third Ward team will meet the winner of the second half August 16 in a playoff if necessary. The second half got off. to an auspicious start, Thursday, with the Second winning over Seventh, 16 to 2. Roberts again proved to be one of the leagues strongest pitchers and with Second having their batting eyes sharp the result was never in doubt. Cedar Valley and First put on a marathon show, the latter winning technically by forfeit, 7 to 0. Due to Cedar Valley having to pick up four ineligible players, but playing for tht "fun" the two teams battled to a 29 to 17 win for the losers, the First Ward conceding when the valley team scored 13 runs in the seventh inning and first entitled to bat. In the Friday night games, Sixth gave Third the scare of their lives when they took a 4 to 0 lead at the end of the fourth inning and it looked like the Third monopoly was going to be broken. However, through poor fielding and some mental lapses, Third scored 2 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth inning to tie it up, going ahead to win 5 to 4. At the end of the eighth inning Nile Wilkin got hold of one of Les Colledge's fast balls and got a four bagger for his effort.
