Show THE Mormon Tabernacle Choir Names 'Miss Utah Nat. New Assistant Conductor Guard of 1958 Salt Lake City Jay E. Welch, Mormon Church choral groups in 32, graduate assistant instructor Utah, Southern California and To be Chosen in the of Utah Music num- University Department, has been named assistant conductor of the d Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The appointment was made by Lester F. Hewlett, president, and Richard P. Condie, conductor of the ensemble, with the approval of the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. The new appointee fills the vacancy caused by the elevation of Prof. Condie from assistant to the conductorship upon the retirement last September 15 of J. Spencer Cornwall, conductor for the past 22 years. Mr. Welch, a native Utahn, is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles (1945), and took his Master's Degree in music at Mills College, Oakland, California, in 1951. He also studied organ under Marcel Dupre in Paris, and orchestral conducting at the Conservatory in Paris and the Conservatory in Geneva, world-fame- 375-voi- Switzerland. He has conducted Hawaii, and has composed a ber of scores for the University of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir of the largest and best known singing groups in the world. Organized more than a century ago, soon after the settlement of Utah by Brigham Young and the Mormon Pioneers, it has made several tours in the United is one States, and in 1955 went to Europe where its performance was widely acclaimed in Great Britain and the musical centers of the Continent. Miss Utah National Guard of 1958 will be selected on the basis of talent, poise, personality, and appearance in bathing suit and evening dress. Deadline for submitting applications for the state contest is February 15, 1958. Applications are to be sent to the office of Gen. Rich.
