This hatchery, the Director explained has never had suitable fry ponds, the main' -- ed low-wat- er NEWS... and channels being too large swift for small fish A contract has been let fur about $29,000 in work, at the Oden Bay Refuge. Water control gates will be repaired, interior dykes built, and the final touches put on this famous waterfowl marsh. This, Leonard said, is the third contract let on Ogden Boy in the past 18 months and this work should wind up the project Next in line will be Clear Lake where the dykes will be repaired and general work done to put the famous bass fishing site in condition until Federal aid its available to make permanent improvments possible. Efforts are also being made, Leonard said, to obtain public permission to drill new welLs at the Logan Hatchery. The State Engineer has refused to grant this project until a public hearing has been held. This hearing on the water problem is set for May 13, 8 p m. at Logan. The sportsmen, state game department, state engineers and the public will be on hand to hour the matter, Leonard pointed out. Utah Pheasants To Get To Consideration Pheasant hunting irf the State of Utah is receiving top consideration these days, Ross Leonard, Utah Fish and Game Director, said today as he announced pheasant pins for a state-wirehabilitation study. The State, havig help from n federal funds, has already started settng up a of pheasant sancturies, all of them located strategically in the State's best pheasant country. Announced today for the first time by the Utah director is the plot for an purchase of a upland bird refuge near Logan in Cache County, and a piece in Boxelder County near Tremonton in the heart of this choice birdland. Eighty acres have been purchased at Roosevelt, and 60 acres in tlie Duchesne vicinity. Negotiations are under way for an 80 acre plot in the Vernal district, and 40 acres in Emery County near Castle Dale. The game department, Leonard pointed out, has already purchsed and planted a piece in the Cedar City region, and another near Burraston Pond in Juab County. Richfield sanctuary between Richfield and Glenwood in a pheasant coutry has also been started. With this ground, Leonard explained, the State will seed it properly, and make the necessary improvements on it for ideal game bird cover. Part of each plot will be fenced with vermin-tit- e wire to keep rodents and other predators off the premises so young birds can be raised. Thse refuges will be closed at all times and guarded When the birds become too plentiful on them they will be and moved to other regions near , T oy, ieonara saia. "We are going into this pheasant program thoroughly", the director stated. We will handle each sanctuary differently, according to the natural surroundings and the factors particularly affecting that locality. We expect some definite results on the pheasant picture in a few years." de Pittman-Robertso- s 50-ac- re 40-ac- re 120-ac- re top-ra- te 8 p! I A RliiG JUST GIVE US I and we'll do the rest. FAMILY Main Street John Holiday, travel editor for n, the Chicago Hth says in his Sunday April man, "Go West, young column: and fulfill that urge." Holiday in the following quotes from his column indicates what the easterners think about the West and the coming vacation time: "There is no doubt that those of us who work in the masonry canyons of the city and dwell in its bustling vastness, the West spells romance and allure To come the West means dude ranches, days in the saddle, nights around a camp-fir- e, chuck wagons, cattle brandand the thrill of portraying ing our pioneer life. 'To some the West means the Great outdoors, wide open spaces, unexcelled fishing and hunting, the thrill of discovering unexplored areas, climbing rugged mountain peaks, of searching for lost mines, of living a nigged " simple, healthy life If the above is what the easterner s interested in, then Utah has plenty of everything men tioned Utahn will agree with Holiday when he says: ". . . . the West anticipates a banner E BOND LIMIT RAISED The $5000 former yearly maximum for purchase of Series E savings bonds by one individual has been raised to $10,000.
