The grave in the Lehi cemetery was dedicated by David H. Carson. Biographicay Sketch Polly Frances Harmon Giles was born in Toquerville, Washington County, Utah, March 4, 1864. and died at Pendleton. Oregon, October She was the daughter and 1944. one of 12 children of Appleton Milo and Elmeda Stringham Harmon, early pioneers who came to Salt Lake Valley in September, 1848. When Polly was about 8 years of age her parents with their family enoved to Holden, Millard Couny. Utah. In this small town she spent her later childhood and her early At that time the womanhood. schools were very primitive. The small children attended classes taught by elderly women in a room in their own homes. Of these early teachers whose schools she attend ed were Sariah Bliss, Aunt Haddy Stringham and Lottie Ashby. Later she attended school in the old adobe school house, a Mr. Brown an Englishman being the instruct-- , or. These were pioneers days so Polly learned to make her own clothes and help her mother make quilts and rag carpets. She was efficient in preparing dried fruits preserves nd pickles. They did not then know the process of can ning fruits. This early training was a great help to her in raising her own family and all through her life. At the age of 18 years she married Joseph Riley Giles, also of Holden. There they lived for many years building and owning their own home. They later moved to Lehi in 1903, where her husband Joseph Riley Giles died in 1924. Polly and Riley Giles were the parents of 6 children, three sons and threee Dennis, daughters. Shirley and Donald Giles, Elmeda Giles Carson, Mabel Giles Cox and Helen Giles Bissell. There are new 18 grandchildren and 16 Polly was a true and loving Wife, a willing helpmate in all her hus band's work and endeavofs thro! their married life. Few children have had1 a mother more loving, devoted and helpful. While living at Holden her husband with others operated a saw mill in the east mountains. She spent the summers there cooking for the mill hands and caring for her own family. At Lehi her husband owned and cultivated a farm on the west side of the valley. For a period of time she spent the summers there aiding in every way to make farming a success. Polly was a pleasant cheerful disposition, tho in very poor health for many years. She loved her home and family and after her husband's death maintained a cheery hospitable home where her relatives and friends enjoyed visiting. Although! deprived of the loving care and companionship of her husband for many years she was never deprived Her lovof love and sympathy. ing devoted family gave her every care possible during her years of sickness. The daughters were untiring in the care and nursing. The sons contj'.buted generously so that her every need and want was provided for. Truly she was blessed by his noble family. Polly had many of the pleasures of life as well as the work and care. She enjoyed several interesting Journeys to California to visit her children and also enjoyed her last few years in Oregon with her daughters. Being a true lover of nature she thoroughly enjoyed the great outdoors, the ocean, the mountains and the forests. She was an honest, charitable friend The waste paper drive in Lehi will begin Monday, October 30, and continue until Thursday, November 2. The drive this fall will be conducted by the Boy Scouts and Future Farmers under direction of the Salvage Committee and the American Legion.
