No scientist can make bones by combining minerals in a test tube, but the human body builds them from calcium and phosphorus, minerals which we pet from the we eat, especially from milk. Other elements go into their making, too. but these are the ones that are needed in the largest amounts, ar.d the ones thut are most likely to be taken in insu:!icient quantities. There's another important material which does not actually go into the Urnes. but is necessary if the body is to build t:.em. That's vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin. During the summer months hours spent out of doors take care of the requirement nicely, but foods rich in vitamin D, especially the fish liver oils, are a more dependable d source for young children. The greatest need for bone building material comes during the years of growth, so wise mothers plan children's diet so they'll include plenty of calcium and phosphorus. Nutrition experts agree that the best way of providing the full quota of calcium is to include a quart of fresh whole milk or its equivalent each day. While other foods, notably green vegetables, contribute some of this mineral too, studies have shown that it's almost impossible to get enough of it when the milk is cut much below this point. Much of the phosphorus a youngster needs will be furnished by the daily quart of milk, and the rest will be added by eggs, cereals, lean meats and fish as they're introduced into the diet. fj 'V ., 7 ' J"- - J. After the ore is mined, it is first ent to a concentator where much of the waste material is removed. Normally about 80 per cent of the waste is removed In the process of concentration. Concentrates are then moved to a smelter, where through a process of Are and heat still more of the impurities are removed. The picture on the left shows the moulten wast- - material being poured from a furnace Into a huge Iron bowl vhieh is placed on wheels for transportation to the slag dump. The picture ou the riht shows the moulten mass being pnured onto the slag dump, where it will remain as mute evidence of the industry it has created in bearing the precious metals from the bowels of the earth for use civilization. The concentrator and the smelter are only part of the process of or reduction. After the metals leav these plants they are sent elsewhere for refining and fabrication. It seems almost Incredible that a ton of ore containing only a fraction of an ounce of gold can bs mined, transported sometimes many miles by truck and rail, then put through the smelter and still yield a profit to its producer. In order to do this millions ot dollars have been Invested In milling and smelting plants In Utah and Salt Lake valley, serving as it does the mines of many western states, has become known as th world's leading mining and imel lng center. year-roun- Trapunto Quilting Easy, Gives Professional Look New $1,000,000 Tunnel i Trapunto quilting is one of those professional looking touches that even the beginner can accomplish on her own sewing machine quite Decorators like it on easily. draperies, cushions, bedspreads, dressing table skirts, even slipcovers. Bingham Canyon has lost much of its population to the beautiful town of Copperton at the mouth of the canyon. The upper end of the old town was built partly within the projected limits of the mining operation ot the copper mine. Much of this is the best policy especially in advertising. While the warring armies in Europe are employing mechanized units to destroy one another, Seattle is mechanizing to save lives in the fight against infantile paralysis. Latest weapon in the battle to aid infantile paralysis victims on the road to recovery is a mechanical walker. The device, designed for comfort and utility, was built by N. Jartside, chief engineer of Swedish hospital, and has proved of great value in helping patients regain use of their weakened limbs. It consists of a metal framework with arm supports, and is mounted on rubber tired casters. "There's a seat which, when the patient sits on it, operates a brake. The "walking machine" resembles the device used by small children stricken with the disease. First to use the apparatus was Mrs. Adam W. Lyskoski of White Center, who is v."v able to walk with crutches. She was stricken with infantile paralysis last August and first used the walker in May, when she also began to wear leg braces. At first completely paralyzed, and nearly 11 months in the hospital,1, Mrs. Lyskoski is now able to ride in cars and to keep her balance on! crutches. She no longer needs to use the walker. "I get around beautifully," she explains, recalling the time when she could not even move her hand. Nurses estimate that within a year and a half, Mrs. Lyskoski will be able to walk without even crutches. She and the other stricken patients find the walker a great boon in their fight to regain health. Cinerarias Solve Shade Problem Color in the shade, especially under trees often gives the home gardener worry. Cinerarias, in their own unique bright shades really solve the problem. Seeds of cinerarias may be sown now, or you may obtain plants from nurserymen. Sow the seed in flats or boxes, preferably in .soil containing and sand. At any rate it should be on the sandy side. Keep the boxes in the shade and when plants have several leaves transplant them to pots or other boxes until ready to put in the garden. They like a rich, light soil, fertilized with manure. Peet moss or leafmold in the soil is beneficial. Cinerarias' color range is wide, many having two shades on one flower. They come in both dwarf and tall types, the former used mainly for bedding, the latter also for cut. flowers. They are excellent as potted plants. for 10c.
