Highway and traffic accidents are largely preventable. During the last sixteen years. 860,000 people have been killed, and over 600,000 people injured in highway and traffic accidents in the United States. This is more deaths than occurred in the six major wars. More people were killed during 1934 than the total numbr of American soliders killed in action in the World War. In Utah durng 1934, 182 people were killed and 4,000 more injured. During 1934 the State of Utah spent $7,282,00.00 to build and main- tain public highways. Not $1.00 was offically spent by the State of Utah through any department or in any manner, in educaional work for highway and traffic safety. The annually increasing fatalities and injuries from highway and traffic accidents demonstrates that purfshment does not effectively educate the public in the fundamentals of safety.
