Peterson, stating that under the present set-u- p he, being a merchant as well as chairman, is returns than getting more relief-fun- d his share. The merchants have been hit as well as everybody else during this debusipression, and a thousand-dolla- r ness from the unemployed hi a period of about two months would be a great If one merhelp to any merchant. chant gets this much business the other merchants wants him to at least compete on an equal basis with them. Under the present system the unem ployed naturally feel obligated to some extent to deal with the chairman be cause he handles the financial end of the relief and the unemployment of the men to a large extent. Because of the above facts the merchants would appreciate a disinterested party as chairman, to get an even "break" In competing with for the money coming In. In other words they do not like a natural obligation policy In the ex pending of public money. The merchants show the size that this obligation amounts to by figures obtained from the counTy commission. The figures show a $1,062.69 business for the chairman, or O. S- P. Store, as compared with $37,26 business for Powers, $39.95 business for Gilchrist, $56.50 business for Van's, $00.00 busi ness for E. N. Webb, $175.03 business for Larsen Bros. $162.86 business for Broadbents, $270.85 business for Lehi Cereal, $538.61 business for People's Co-oFourth Ward $19.74 business for Good business $175.66 Grocery, L. John C. for business $75.48 wins, son, $73,81 business for Whipple Lumber, $197.60 business for Lehi Lumber and $20.00 for the City Bakery. They point to the fact that in many of the cases the expenditure has only been made on merchandise that cannot be bought at G. S. P. Store showing that under the present system one merchant gets as much business on groceries as all the other merchants put together. $4,439.05 has been allotted to Lehi of which $923.00 was allotted Just recently. The merchants have asked the mayor to get a new chairman before this last money is issued to the unemployed and in that way see if the same merchant still gets the bulk of the money. The committee representing the merchants in the investigation of the county records and interviewing the mayor, and in trying to investigate the records held in Lehi by the chairman for the month of October composed of the following: Robert Gilchrist, Thomas Powers, David Taylor, Albert "Van Wagoner, Armond Webb and George P. Price. In trying to see the records, the chairman refused to let them but promised them a report for the month desired to be obtained on Tuesday. Altho this is one of the first times known that public books have been refused for investigation.
