Susana Tauteoli's Forward baseline jumper in the final second bounced off the back of the rim, preserving the win for the Cougars and dampering what had been a great night for the Utah junior. Individuality was the key for the Utes over the weekend, for the team is too small to compete for overall team title as they placed last in both the men's and women's standings. However, the team from Utah contributed in a big way, with two individuals turning in performances worthy of national meet qualification. As expected, Traci Stevens, the sensation headed for high-jumpi- the Olympic Trials, captured her second straight WAC title in the high jump with aleap of 5'11" 34 inches. Stevens was already slated to head for the NCAA meet which will be March in Indianapolis, Ind. with her strong national reputation, and was able to pad her standing with 13-1- 4, a solid performance. One athlete who was a pleasant surprise for Utah was football defensive back Ed Miller, who according to track and field head coach Mike Jones, "literally jumped out of his head", and took a surprising jumped out of her head and leaped a new personal best in the triple jump, going 37 feet 11 inches to place fifth. Morgan was not expected to place in the event either. BYU led 2 with three minutes left, but the Utes scored the final six points of the half to take a 5 lead at the break. The Cougars came out clawing in the second half, however, opening with a 12-- 4 run to take a 2 lead with 16:37 left to play. The Utes would continually chip away at the lead, moving to within one or two points, before BYU went on another run. A bucket by Tauteoli put Utah but the Cougars reeled within off seven of the next nine points for lead with 6:48 to play before a 59-5- 2 38-3- 47-4- 52-5- 0, receiving another gift, the fifth personal foul on Ute Mikki Kane. With one of it's "Big Three" loss scorers on the bench, Utah had to scrap back even harder to get into the game and another bucket by Tauteoli gave Utah a 68-6- 7 lead with 55 seconds left on the clock. Kidd launched a three-pointthat missed, but BYU rebounded and center Debbie Dimond was fouled by Tauteoli as she drove to the bucket. Elliott said it was a bad er call after a good defensive stand by her team, but nonetheless, Dimond hit both for a 69-6- 8 BYU lead. After a timeout and with 19 seconds left on the clock, Utah worked the ball around the key and got it inside to Tauteoli, who dished it off instead of shooting, much to the chagrin of Elliott. BYU knocked the ball out of bounds with 2.4 seconds left, giving Utah its final chance. But Tauteoli's shot missed and the Cougars began celebrating. After the game, Elliott said that having Kane on the bench was a definite liability for the Utes. "We needed her on the floor," Elliott said. "Sana did a lot of things to get us there, but we needed Mikki in the last 30 seconds." Tanya Zachary had 20 points to help the Ute cause, while guard Karen Alcorn dished off a season-hig- h 10 assists. Alcorn, however, extended her recent shooting slump to three games with a performance and nine points. The win was only BYU's second against Utah in the last 14 meetings.
