Show r i The Daily Utah Chronicle Friday. January 17, 1992 - Page Five Letters Sex discrimination is alive and well, especially for parking committee Editor: Discrimination based on sex is alive and well in subtle ways at the University of Utah. If you have a parking ticket to appeal, you are very likely to find yourself in front of an committee or jury who will decide your innocence or guilt Males have an advantage of being seen and heard by a jury of their peers, while females do not. These males feel that they are fair in all-ma- le their judgment, but they can't tickets possibly be, since most are appealed based on extenuating circumstances. Most men do not understand the way women think nor what their needs are. There have been many studies done of lack the assessing communication between men and women. Women's thinking is linear and more open while men tend to think rigidly and horizontally. Men will usually never deviate from the rules of a game or consider each situation in terms of discipline for children or others, while women consider each situation on the basis of its merits. Most men have never been single parents, and especially student single parents, and have no idea what the particular stresses and difficulties involved are. I found my experience before the parking committee to be extremely intimidating, frustrating and humiliating. They did not care that I had nowhere else to park and that no one else who was parked in "no parking zones" immediately behind me and for longer periods of all-ma- le time did not receive tickets. They did not care that I had to pick up some free football tickets so my kids could go to the Saturday game or that I had nowhere to park because of a higher education meeting going on in the Union or that I was parked illegally for only four minutes, leaving my car unlocked and windows open. One man said it didn't matter that no one else received a parking ticket and that he was once a student and knew about financial straits....but he was never a student! Most men single-pare- nt never are. If they're married, their wives are usually supporting them through college and washing their dirty dishes and clothes and cooking their meals, so they can devote all their time to studying. Women have to do all that themselves and they don't have the time to park a mile away to pick up tickets or whatever! We can't afford to be apathetic when dealing with our own education. Urgent Student Support and the Library Construction Bond gives us a real opportunity to improve it. Legislators will listen to our voice and maybe by this time next year we won't have to write letters pleading for more money. Instead we'll be writing thank you notes.
