For the new n STANLEY H. KAPLAN LSAT. My son's little league team was in first place for several weeks, and it was making a nervous wreck out of me. It wasn't that I was worried some upstart team was going to unseat was worried some team I wasn't. Sound strange for a mother to wish upon her son? Not so. Read on. Jimmy's team, as do so many other uses these rules to his best advantage. Sure, they must all have had the same dream of coming in first at the end of the season at one time or another, but mostly, these boys just wanted to get a hit and make it safely to first base. Instead of learning the rules of the game which would (hopefully) teach them how to get along with their fellow man and govern themselves on and off the field, they were taught to take these rules and screw their fellow man. They were taught to argue with and berate the umpire and show as much disrespect for authority as possible. "If you can make a fool out of another human being with your superior knowledge, then so much the better." Once, when a team member got a hit and overran first base without touching it, the home crowd tried to call the umpire's attention to it. With that, the coach turned to the crowd, smiled and said, "Don't help him. What he doesn't know won't hurt him." Oftentimes have I seen this same players and don't think they didn't After the group bashing, I took my son aside and told him how proud I was of him that he didn't take part in the group activity. I told him I wasn't going to take him off the team, either (although I wanted to in the worst way), because 0' Life or the "win at all costs" "coach-itis- " syndrome. Eventually, it got so bad that the kids themselves, instead of encouraging a fellow teammate to "get a hit," or "you can do it!" would pick on the boy until the poor thing would dissolve into tears. It was reminiscent of young hatchlings picking on the weakest one until it bled to death. A case in point: There was one little kid on the team with a lot of pluck. This kid wanted to play baseball. He wanted to be Babe Ruth in the worst way. He even ate those disgusting Wheaties for breakfast, in hopes that it would build up his batting strength. The only thing wrong was this kid couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. The only way he made it to first base was when he was walked. At the end of one particular game, this kid was 0 for 3. When it was nearly all over, the coach yelled at the boys and said, "Let's get some hits. You're letting us down out there." When the game was finally over, the coach decided to read each boys batting statistics out loud so the entire team could help in the humiliation of the weaker he needed to experience the good as well as the bad in every aspect of his life if he was ever going to get along in the world. I told him to show respect for his coach because he was his adviser, even if he was a jerk. (Being an adult to do with had nothing itself shouldn't it adulthood by command respect.) Besides, I figured he was teaching my son some interesting life lessons by his own poor example. It has to do with basic human values, and perhaps it's too simplistic to believe that it all starts in our childhood, learning to get along with each other in a little league game. Why not write to your congressional representative, senator, or even the president of the United States or anyone else you don't trust, and see if they ever played little league ball. Does it sound like sour grapes to you? Maybe it is, I don't know. About all I do know is that these are the children who will be running our country some day, and it scares the hell out of me. I'm happy to say my son's team came in second in the league standings, but it was a bitter pill for the coach and his able assistant to swallow. I'm not sure what the other boys on the team learned this summer, but Jimmy learned why it's important to be fair and honest.
