By Jim Burton 6-- 4, Chronicle Sports Writer In the second round Costa and Stevens scooted by BYU's Patti The Lady Ute tennis team kicked off its regular season by sending four Lady Ute players to the Invitational's doubles final Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Lady Utes Susie Costa and Ruth Ann Stevens, the tourney's top seeded doubles team, and Liz Fox and Kristin Siegmund, the second seeded team, first-annu- al met in Saturday's final. Costa and Stevens won the match in straight sets 6-- 4, 6-- 6-- 4. Both teams faced bumpy roads to the finals. Costa and Stevens met Weber State's Susie Ennega and Kristin Kelly in Thursday's first Urbana and Anna Funderburk 6-- 2, 6-- 4. Hours before Saturday's final, Costa and Stevens made short work of another Weber State team. This time the two Lady Utes shut down Lani Hunsaker and Pascale Thymian 6- 6-- 2, Fox and Siegmund, who received a bye, breezed by Story Hurst and Darel Boehmer of Idaho first-roun- d State Friday 6-- 0, 6-- 2. In the quarterfinals, Fox and Siegmund edged Weber State's Katarina Skylleberg and Roxanne Engle 6-- 4, 7-- 5. Utah's only other doubles team, men's tennis team showed it could pick up right where it left off over the weekend. The Utes beat Weber State and Idaho State by a combined match total of 18-- 0 Friday and Sunday. Friday Weber State met the Utes in the Eccles Tennis Center At No. 1 and left Utah's Johan Hogstedt singles d. empty-hande- defeated Dermot Sweeney 6-- 6-Chris Entzel beat Lars Hobaek 4, 6-- 2, 6-- 1, while Utah's Martin 6-- 1. 0, 7-- 6, 6-- 2, 2, 1. 6-- 1. 0, 6-- 2. Hogstedt and Reilly defeated Hobaek and Rosene 6-- 2, 6-- 2, 6-- match 1 against George and Saberon. Sunday Idaho State came to town with similar results, Utah won the match 0, not losing a set in the process. Kempin and Costa were the only Lady Utes to survive the first round, and, ironically enough, those two met Friday morning in the third round Costa, who beat BYU's Urbana in straight sets Thursday night, fell 2 to her teammate, Kempin. 2 Kempin beat BYU's Holmes to get to the third round, only to lose to another BYU player, Funderburk, in Saturday morning. But Cougar Coach Ann Valentine reasoned that a trip to Salt Lake City was unwarranted since both players could square off in Provo just as easily.
