Show FitidAy, DecEMbu 4, 1987 ChRONicU office hopes to change society's attitudes U. By Darren Hawkins Chronicle assistant news editor opportunity society. There's been a crying need for a number of years." He said several barriers have been set up in society to prevent minorities and women from getting jobs or being perceived as equals. "Research has shown that likes hire likes," he said. "It's only natural to hire the person most like you, when in reality, diversity is. very important. It takes a conscious effort to correct that." Since 1975, when an affirmative action program was formally approved at the U., the office has been doing just that. And although the University of Utah has made progress, it still has a long way to It is also out to change, society's attitudes and perceptions of different cultures and races. "We need to do more than simply open opportunities." said Tom Loveridge, programmer analyst for Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO). We shouldn't have artificial cultural barriers. We need to get an equal law go in affirmative action, Kaye Coleman, OEO director, said. Major areas of concern are the areas us non-conscio- The Office of Equal Opportunity at the University of Utah is doing far more than encouraging the hiring of minorities and women at the U. profession in Utah would have become progressively worse. Therefore, in 1984 the college established a program of recruitment, academic and financial support and placement for minority students. "Three things are necessary to overcome the underrepresentation of minorities in the legal profession: commitment, resources and a plan to put the two together," Martinez wrote in a recruitment pamphlet. "In 1972, there were only eight minority students enrolled in law school," Martinez said. "Today, out of 360 law students, we have 33 minority students." Martinez said there are only two or three universities that have a recruitment program as comprehensive as the one at the U. Many universities are still in the "passive mode" established by many law schools after uprisings during the males law, chemistry, biology, physics and engineering to name a few. The U. Office of Equal Opportunity is more interested specifically in faculty and staff members, but also monitors affirmative action programs for students. Loveridge studies the percentages of minorities and women who have the qualities to work in a certain area and then compares those figures with the U. If the U. is lower in a certain area, Loveridge sends the department some from page one Blacks make up .6 percent of the state's population and only .2 percent of the College of Engineering's population. Native Americans compose about 1 .2 percent of the state's population and about .4 percent of the college's population. Women also fare poorly. They make up about 44 percent of the state population and 10 percent of the college's student body. Hispanics comprise about 2.4 percent of the college's population, while 5 percent of Utah's people are hispanic. Asian students, on the other hand, are well represented. Four percent of the college's students are Asian, compared to 2 percent at the state level. Another reason the three minority groups are not well 1960s. After the upheaval of the '60s, many universities simply did not implement affirmative programs to aid minorities. The law school uses four sources of computerized lists for identifying minority students, as well as holding a Minority Law Recruitment Conference. Personal referrals also aid in identifying prospective students. The academic and financial support program consists of counseling, a legal process course, tutorials and financial support. Placement is the third component of the affirmative action program. A network of informal contacts with public agencies and private firms is available to help place students in jobs. k THEATER GUIDE Stawr Cmifflf - M 00 AnyHm- !-) populations. represented is because many of them are not proficient in the math and science skills necessary for an engineering major, Trujillo said. The Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Program (MESA) is designed to enrich the academic experience of high school students in math and science. The Minority Engineering Program (MEP) recruits students for the fields of engineering and provides academic support and career planning. CHOICE . . . t IT S THRILLING EXCITING. Many areas at the U. have already reached their goals One big problem facing U. affirmative action programs is competition from private industries. Some companies also have affirmative action programs and can hold out higher salaries as an incentive for minorities and women. Another problem is Utah's large white population. Loveridge said it is sometimes difficult to recruit minorities to the U. traditionally dominated by white engineering from page one ; PAqE ThREE (PG-1- f (5cia 9:15. ft30 "HELLO MARY LOU.
