Show Page Fire The Daily Utah Chronicle, Friday, June 6, 1986 Participant says protest movement gives chance to 'commit to cause' Staff writer from them, and of the American Peace Testa demonstration against nuclear testing. Participants gathered Friday at Camp Desert Rock, not far from the Nevada Test Site. On Saturday, speakers including Daniel EUsberg, Carl Sagan and Oregon Rep. Jim Weaver addressed the group. "It seemed a little unnecessary though," said Roberts, "because almost everyone there already believed what the speakers had to say. "We learned a lot more just from talking to the people around us." Next day, training was held. "We split up non-violen- ce getting "out of hand" at the test site. " At 6 a jn. on Monday, participants gathered at the test site to hold a vigil. "We held up signs and tried to communicate to the workers we were not there to take their jobs away." "We think a lot of workers just don't know how dangerous the site is." More speakers addressed the group then, including a woman who survived the bombing of Hiroshima. Then, approximately 100 people who wanted to commit civil disobedience broke into their affinity groups and walked onto the site. After being arrested and handcuffed, one group sat down in an act of passive resistance and had to be carried onto the bus. They may be facing more serious charges because they resisted arrest, she said. Part of the purpose of the arrests is to legally challenge nuclear testing on the basis of a world pact signed after the Nuremberg Trials. "It was a pact not to be destructive to the world and humanity." On the week of the peace test, no nuclear tests were conducted. However, the fifth announced blast this year at the site was done Thursday morning, reports the Deseret Netcs. There will be more activities in the future, said Roberts. "It's important that people realize people can make a difference." She quoted the Rev. Martin Luther King, will have the final word in reality." "Non-violen- U. Now she is involved in the peace movement. "It's the first time I've felt I have to commit to a cause. I think that fact makes me a barometer of global mentality we know we have to stop the arms race." Along with 400 others, she participated in the American Peace Test last weekend at the Nevada Test Site 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. She became interested in the peace movement after reading an article in Catalyst about the Great Peace March. "I was having lunch and after I read this article, I burst into tears. I thought, 'Thank God, someone is doing something," said Roberts.
