Olscn, director of the Artificial Heart Research Laboratory at the University of Utah has been appointed director of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Division of Artificial Organs, effective Feb. 15. Olscn will succeed Wlllem J. Kolff, distinguished professor of medicine and surgery, who will retire on his 75th birthday. KolfT, a native of the Netherlands who founded the institute and division at the U. in 1967, will into new manufacturing continue research part-tim- e methods for artificial hearts. Renowned for his pioneering work in developing artificial kidneys and artificial hearts, Kolff will be honored at an International Symposium on Artificial Organs, Biomedical Engineering and Transplantation in Salt Lake Gty. 3 Jan. Olscn has deep roots in Utah. He was The born in Bingham, attended high school in Gunnison and received a B.S. degree in animal nutrition and chemistry from Utah State University. After earning a doctor of veterinary medicine from Colorado State University, he 20-2- 55-year-- old began a veterinary practice in Smithfield, Utah specializing in large animal care. Olsen, who also holds appointments as research ;: professor of surgery and of pharmaceutics, received a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship in to study at the University of Colorado Medical School. He joined the Institute for Biomedical 1968 Engineering in 1 972 to work on research and development of total artificial hearts. "No one replaces KoliT," said Olscn. "I know of no giant who could step into his large wooden shoes. Kolff gave us a solid running start at making the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Division of Artificial Organs preeminent in the world."
