Although hazing has, obviously, been outlawed by the national chapters of most fraternities and sororities, Westol said many houses still retain their hazing activities under different guises. He presents these views through his mock trial, in which he creates the case of Michael O'Brien, a young pledge to the fictional fraternity of Gamma Ku Pi in the fall of 1986. Over the course of MichaelVplcdgirig and process, Westol presents O'Brien as "not a pre-initiati- on perfect pledge," but an "outstanding young man both academically and athletically." But things become grim shortly thereafter when Michael, exhausted both physically and mentally by Gamma Ku Pi's rigorous "Hell Week," is forced to drop to the ground for pushups while intoxicated, inducing him to choke to death on his own vomit. VTestol's somber audience is then asked to assume the role of John Corcoran, the president of Gamma Nu Pi and Michael's "big brother" within the fraternity. Because it was he who forced Michael to try pushups in his condition, it's Corcoran who faces charges of The one thing Westol doesn't tell his audience is what the final verdict would be in the trial of John Corcoran. "What would the verdict be? I don't know," Westol said. "But I hate doing this session because it makes me sick to my stomach. "What arc we going to do today, folks? It's not a matter of eliminating hazing, it's a matter of replacing it," Westol said. He also encouraged the fraternity and sorority members in attendance both actives and pledges not to turn from the consequences of hazing, but to make a difference within their own organizations. "You have a responsibility to get rid of hazing and replace it with something positive." involuntary manslaughter. ;The rest of Westol's presentation involves the painful aftermath of Michael's death including John Corcoran trial. "We almost went to war with Iran over similar things that were done to our POWs there." pre-initiati- Westol's final words to his audience were simple. "Do something about hazing," he said.
