For that price, the club offers students a chance to train as often as they like, up to 13 times a week. Members of the club have different reasons for joining, is not the primary goal. but most agree "I'm addicted," club member Sherry Ottmann said of the sport. "It's definitely a good physical and mental workout, and it's something I'll be doing the rest of my life. More than learning it to be able to defend myself, it teaches me discipline and patience." Stacy Coleman, president of the club, said she became interested in the group for similar reasons. I hate to spoil the suspense for everybody, but the Niners will win... and win big. A score in the neighborhood of 31-sounds about right. The big question coming in to the game is who will win the battle of the quarterbacks. Miami's youngster Dan Marino set a veritable slew of records this fall, while San Francisco's Joe Montana merely recorded another superb season and led his 15 regular season team to an NFL-recowins. 17 rd NFC CHAMPS Peter Behle Experience, or the lack of it, will play a big role in the poor performance Marino will give this weekend. The pressure will make Marino feel like he's back at his college days at Pittsburgh, where he fell to pieces his senior year. The Niner defense will have Marino wishing he was back playing Pop Warner ball in the fourth grade. San Francisco boasts Ronnie Lott, D wight Hicks and the finest defensive backfield in the league in addition to an incredible pass rush led by the amazing Fred Dean. The humility will do Marino some good. After setting all those records this year, his head has swelled up just a tad. His head will be swelling after Sunday, but it won't be from conceit. Look for the 49ers to pick off at least a couple passes at most opportune times. Marino will be wobbly near the end of the first half after he has been sacked four or five times. Montana, on the other hand, will have another one of his nearly flawless outings. His stats should read something like 27 of ... 36 for 352 yards and three touchdowns. Without doubt, Montana is the finest QB in the league and he'll show why Sunday. San Francisco is also blessed with a fine running game, while the Dolphins are virtually without one. Wendell Tyler has solved his fumbling problems since he was traded to the Niners, and runs, the ball with considerable success. Tyler's teammate, Roger Craig, specializes in turning short receptions into long gains. Miami's "Killer B's" don't have much e. to offer except their silly little The Niners will shred the Dolphin defense without much effort. The 49ers have taken a lot of abuse in recent weeks about their playoff wins over the Giants and Bears. The criticism may be warranted, but the facts show that the San Francisco team won both those contests by fairly large margins. Another factor in the 49ers' favor is the nick-nam- less-than-ste- home-fiel- d llar advantage. Sure, Stanford Stadium isn't Candlestick Park, but the two facilities are only about an hour apart and while the Dolphins are living in their hotel rooms, the Niners are staying at home. While a majority of the crowd will be cheering for the 49ers, it won't help much, but it can't hurt. No doubt, you'll be hearing about how the potent Miami passing attack can't be stopped by any team. Don't believe it. The Niners have the most under-rate- d defense in the league. Just ask the Bears, who couldn't score a point. This year's 49ers have displayed a knack of playing up or down to the level of their opponent and still coming out victorious. The Dolphins are indeed a good team and the Niners will have to come up with an excellent performance to win. And that's exactly what they'll do Sunday. All things considered, the 49ers should roll to a big win and don't be surprised if the eventual margin is even larger than two touchdowns. Student tickets for the Jan. 25 Runnin' Ute-Wyomi- ng game in the Special Events Center will be given out beginning Wednesday. The usual procedures will be followed, with the tickets being distributed at 5 p.m. No student will be allowed to pick up more than four ducats in any combination of student and guest tickets. Thursday will mark the start of tickets being given away for the Jan. 26 Utah-BY- U game in the SEC. Line numbers will be given out, suiting at 4:30 p.m. at the student (southwest) entrance to the SEC. Tickets will be distributed immediately thereafter, beginning at 5 p.m. ' Quit expects dosagire 49ers are OK, but no match for Marino and company All right, I'll admit it. This is one of those rare sports events when there's no clear choice for me. This is no BYU-Utano Yankees-Dodger- s, no Celtics-LakerIt's not that easy. I sort of like them both. When the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins tangle in Sunday's Super Bowl, then, you would probably guess I'm going to be my way right the afternoon. through Rooting for the team with the lead at any given time and h, s. fence-stridi- ng other similar The 49ers are, after all, a tremendously talented professional football team. They are a recent Super Bowl champion, which AFC CHAMPS John Youngren means they handled the pressures, fought off the hype and ultimately succeeded in winning the most important football game they ever played. They also have had a couple of humbling years in between, which is better in the long run because it proves they are human. But the 49ers didn't do too much losing this year. They won 15 games in the regular season, more victories than any other team in the league. And that figure tops the numbers posted by all the big mamas, like the Redskins, Raiders, Seahawks, Broncos and Bears. But it is just a paltry win more than the team they'll meet, the only club that could possibly give the 49ers a challenge in the Super Bowl: Miami. The Dolphins matched most of what San Francisco did this year they won 14 games. They were also the only team in the NFL to go a big chunk of the year without a defeatin fact they didn't lose until falling to the Chargers in overtime 1 1 weeks into the season. In fact it's the best year Coach Don Shula has put together in Miami since 1972 (not counting the strike-ye- ar of 81). The Dolphins match-u- p well with the 49ers in ways besides won-lo- st records. The Dolphin defense, or "Killer Bees," can hit 'em around with the best defenses in the league. And Shula is considered one of the best coaches in the history of the game, a genius when it comes to utilizing available talent. But the real story of the Dolphins this year, and the reason they will slip right past San Francisco when push comes to shove, is Dan Marino. Say what you will about the Dolphin quarterback call him pretty boy, or lucky. But the bottom line is he wins. The Dolphins outscored opponents 589-33- 6 this year, and 48 times it was Marino's arm that put the points on the board. That's a professional football record. Period. He also threw for over 5,000 yards this year (another NFL record), and was selected by his peers, and just about everyone else, as the AFC's MVP. Marino's influence shines through the Dolphin offense. The second-yea- r had two primary receivers, Mark Clayton and Mark Duper. The results? Clayton led the AFC with an average of 19 yards per catch. Duper was the runner-uaveraging 18.4 per signal-call- er p, reception. The Dolphin quarterback threw for 273 on the year, some 8 1 more than first-dow- ns his opponents. Marino is also quick-foote- d; he was sacked only 14 times on the season. And he threw for an average of nearly 320 yards per game. Now Joe Montana is no slouch himself, and if there is one quarterback in the game who can give Marino a run, it would be the 49ers' star. But the point is this just happens to be Marino's year. The Dolphin quarterback has been pure gold. And the capping glory to a golden season is a silver trophy the Vince Lombardi trophy, awarded to Super Bowl champions. Like I've said, I like the 49ers. But I like Marino's Dolphins just a little better. Look for Miami, in a thriller (if that's possible in a Super Bowl), 31-2- 4. |
