II-- ' .- ( of jholcday a 'firat The University of Utah will commemorate the life of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 14. The Nobel Prize winner, born on Jan. 15, will be remembered with a national holiday the third Monday of each January beginning in 1986. "The early observance demonstrates our commitmnent to Dr. King's ideals," said U. professor Martin M. Chcmcrs. "So far as is known, this is the only observance of its kind." The observance is highlighted by a keynote address by Rep. Louis Stokes. Stokes was the first black Congressman from Ohio. A panel of local and national leaders discussing the contributions of King is on the agenda, as well as a memorial luncheon where University professor J.D. Williams will speak. Acclaimed poet Maya Angelou and the Faith Temple Choir of Salt Lake will salute Dr. King with words and music. Schedules ot all events are posted across campus. The legacy of Martin Luther King is finally receiving the recognition and understanding it deserves. The national holiday has been too long in coming.
