Scon Matheson will ring in 1985 with a stint at return to private life after an eight-ye- ar the helm of Utah's state government Matheson will officially step down Monday. Norm Bangerter, the first Republican to occupy the office in 20 years, faces no easy task as he follows one of Utah's most popular governors. Matheson has had phenomenal success in his two terms as the state's ranking Democrat. clever Pocket Through leadership of key councils and outspoken concern for the preservation of Utah's environment, he has focused national attention on Utah. His political and personal strengths have been recognized as well, bringing offers of prestigious party positions and encouragement to enter national politics. The announcement that Matheson would not seek a third term was greeted with regrets from both sides of Utah's political fence. He has been notably successful in striking a balance in our Republican-dominate- fe ' ' fib. state. d Matheson admits he h is some misgivings about private law practice, but says he "is comfortable with the cycle and with what re-enter- ing has been done," as he leaves political life. One can only hope that his departure will not be permanent. Matheson's political future is too bright to abandon.
