The focus of the festival is the Independent Film by Kathryn Leigh Samuel Chronicle staff The seventh United States Film Festival, sponsored for the first time by the Sundance Institute, will feature the Independent Film Competition, national premieres and seminars. in Park Gty, The festival, which will be held Jan. 18-is the country's leading showcase for American Utah, independent films. Sponsorship from the Sundance Institute has provided the festival with an invaluable network of contacts, ongoing administration, extensive resources, as well as a home, said Saundra Saperstcin, festival spokeswoman. The Sundance Institute, founded in 1980 by Robert 27 Redford, is a national organization for filmmakers, dedicated to the advancement of independent feature filmmaking. The United States Film Festival and the Sundance Institute share mutual goals to develop independent New Class Winter " 1985 Econ. 390: Nuclear Arms Race Competition where top dramatic and documentary filmmakers vie for honors and prize money. Jury members for the dramatic entries include Bob Young, Director of The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez; Peter Biskind, editor of American Film and Mirra Bank, director . of Enormous Changes at the Last Minute. Documentary category jurors are Frederick Wiseman, director of Titicut Follies; D.A. Pennebaker, director of Don V Look Back and Barbara Kopple, director of Harlan County, USA. The Independent Film Competition will include 24 films in the dramatic and documentary categories. Dramatic entries include films such as Victor Nunez A Flash of Green, Heartbreakers by Bobby Roth, The Roommate by Nell Cox and Joel Coen's Simple Blood. Documentary works that will be screened include Seventeen by Joel Demon and Jeff Krcines; Robert Epstein's The Times of Harvey Milk and Tom Johnson and Lance Bird's The World of Tomorrow. National premieres featured at the festival will be John Schlesinger's The Falcon and the Snowman, starring Timothy Hutton and Sean Pcnn; Mrs. Soffel, starring Diane Keaton and Mel Gibson and Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo. Highlights of the 1985 festival include a premiere of ITuv Down Fast, the Museum of Modern Art's restored version of D.W. Griffith's 1920 classic starring Lillian Gish and Richard Barthelmess, with the Salt Lake Chamber Ensemble performing the original score. In addition, a homage to Francois Truflaut ( "Antonie Doniel will feature his Cycle," including 400 Blows, Antonie et Colette, Stolen Kisses and Bed and Board.
