Editor's note: The Chronicle continues its Ute sports year in review today with a look at the NCAA champion gymnastics squad. m Although it was their third in a row, it was definitely the " toughest. The Ute gymnasts rolled to their third straight national title this past season, but unlike the previous two crowns, Utah won the title as an underdog. The Utes were dealt a thought-tp-b- e glancing blow during the regional meet when last year's NCAA champion Sue Stednitz suffered a season-endin- g knee injury. The rest of the team, though, made up the slack at the finals. Coming into the meet, the Utes brought with them only seven healthy athletes and had just finished second to No. 1 --ranked Arizona State in the regional meet. Even though Utah was the host team, the consensus was the ASU would claim the title. Utah didn't see it that way. After starting on the beam, considered the toughest of the four events to gain high scores on, the Utes cruised through the meet and ended up winning by well over a point. The Utes scored 184.65 to take the title over ASU (183.30). Fullerton, Alabama, and Florida finished well back to round out the top five. Leading the Utes was junior Megan McCunniff, who took the title. Also winning an individual crown was Elaine all-rou- all-arou- 1933 nd . as""' nd Alfano. The sophomore won her second straight vault championship. Ute Lisa Mitzel took fourth in the while Alfano received fifth-plahonors. McCunniff, in addition to the crown, took second place on the uneven bars, sixth on the vault and seventh on the floor, Linda Kardos finished second on the beam, with Mitzel fourth and Cindy Paul ninth. The Utah team should be strong again next year with no v seniors lost from this past season. One factor that will go against the Utes is that the site of the finals will be UCLA. But after this year's performance, its hard to believe that anything will get in the Utes way. all-arou- nd, ce all-arou- nd If-- 1 Tnnnnrni'irfT--riti- f i "i i rr i r rri m fmn fwa isni'i nrn .f "rnnrm Ttrrrr iTmn mnniMTi'c rwni Ute junior Megan McCunniff won the NCAA title at the championships held in the Special Events Center in early ApriL Utah went on to claim the team title, beating out ASU for the crown.
