Show Gymnasts to stirlve for mew title by Kelly Kilkenny Chronicle staff The dust that was stirred up from winning the 1981 AIAW National Championship title has settled temporarily. Last season, the University gymnastics team received the highest score in two out of four events. The team finished first in floor exercises and balance beam, second in the uneven parallel bars and third in vaulting. But thrills of accomplishments need to be reinforced, and gymnastics goach Greg Marsden is aware of that. So, the squad's ambition this year is to seek a new title the NCAA Championship and win all four events as a team, as well as receive some individual honors. The team's five new recruits will offer added strength in the vaulting routine. "Our vaulting has been bolstered a whole lot; and in fact, that may be the largest improved event this .year," Marsden said. , The new Utes are freshmen Elaine Alfano, Celeste Harrington, Cindy Paul, Wendy Whiting and the internationally experienced Susan Stednitz. who represented the United States in France last year on the USA national team. "I think Elaine Alfano could potentially win the national championship in vaulting," Marsden said. "If Christa Canary (who previously suffered a foot injury )comes back strong, that will help, along with the strengths of Stednitz and Paul." Marsden believes Whiting's strength on the parallel bars, as well as the addition of Harrington and returning gymnast Andra Turner, will make up for the loss of last year's senior. Diane Ellingson. who finished second in nationalson the bars routine. "With those three xop!e added to our bar team and just losing Diane Ellingson off that team. I really think that we'll have a good shot at winning the bar event in nationals," break, the squadreportedfor"trainingramp"on Sept. IS. The team worked out eight hours a day. six days a week, doinga lot of flexibility and strengthening exercises while working on basic techniques. During this period, the gymnasts underwent a battery of 10 to 12 psychological tests given by sports psychologist. Dr. Keith Henschen. to determine their concentration, strengths and weaknesses in anxiety, etc. In addition, they were given a class in biomechanics one hour everyday from Dr. Jerry George, whoalso does skill analysis with the squad during workouts. The second three-wee- k block includes progressive development of skills the girls will use in their routine. In the next block, they will be putting together combinations of skills. And during the last block, the team will finish its routines. Then, the three weeks before their first meet will be strictly work routines. Marsden believes Utah's gymnastics team will be ranked No. I in the preseason olls. "U'eVe got probably one of the toughest schedules in the nation because we have nine meets before regional and nationals; and every one of them is against one of the top nine teams in the country," he said. We really don't have any slack meets this year at all." The gymnastics team's first meet with Arizona State is scheduled for Jan. 25. 1. - .- v f&B Freshman Sue Stednitz i J of San Jose. "We'd like for one of our girls to win the national this year," he said. "We've championship in the never had an individual be a national champion, so we're really going to attempt to accomplish that as well." Marsden is confident with returning gymnast Shannon Coleman's lead on the beam, supplemented with Stednit's strength as well. Action has already been taken to make these goals a reality.
