Show Tht OtStf Utah Chronldt. January 15, P3Twtv two l&eg&ff&s of ytmn Miss&iko: somebody in New Orleans traded him for Gail Goodrich a few years ago. Nissalke's reputation as a demanding coach is reflected in the practices he runs. "How a person practices is a good indication of how he'll perform in a game." he said. "This is a real physical league, and the only way a player is going to make it is to work hard, especially in practice," he said Jj "We are in the bottom third of the league in talent, but we're getting there slowly." Nissalke said. "Dantley has become an overwhelming player, and Griffith should become an overw helming player." he said. ard spot is one that has been a soiespot for The pow the team. "We're a power forward and center away from becoming a good team and hopefully through the draft and maiket we ran do it." he said. the Nissalke gives general manager Frank Iaydcn all the credit for finding Jeff Wilkens and Rickey Green, but credits the players for the drive and hustle the show on he court. "Wilkens and Green are an amazing story. I lei e are two guys who have been in and out of the league and just hung in there," he said. "Wilkens can do a lot of things most big guys can't, and Green is the penetrating point guard we needed." he said. t Still, the faces in the lineup change as the search for continues. Already 16 faces have w orn Jazz uniforms in search of a job. Right now, another Continental Basketball League hopeful. Mel Bennett, is with the team hoping. "The jury is still out on Salt Lake City as a professional sports town." Nissalke has often said.Attendance is actually down from last year, averaging over 7.000 a game. But fans are just going to have to be patient as the team slowly rebuilds. Remember, he never promised you anything! Frank Schuck Chronicle staff When you're winning, you're the greatest. When you're losing, the fans in the stands call for your dismissal. Such is the life of a coach in the NBA. The ups and downs of the league are nothing new to Jazz coach Tom Nissalke, a veteran of 12 seasons on the circuit. Nissalke has come under some criticism lately from both fans and the press. A reporter for a local paper questioned Nissalke for his constant negative remarks about the team such as, "We just don't have the talent the other clubs have." or "We'ie just not big enough." This criticism was leveled when the team was sailing along with an unbelievable 12-- 6 win-los- s record in the beginning of the season. fans Nissalke was cautious then, warning 82 and media not to get too excited, as the season has games to play and anything can happen. I le was right, as the Jazz since then is including many terrible losses to the big jxiweiful teams in the fcastern Conference. "We nevei promised you anything," Nissalke said after a recent game, as if to say "i told you so" about the team's woes in the last few weeks. Nissalke turned down the job as general manager in Houston to become the head coach of the L'tah Jazz. Picking up the pieces of a team ravaged by mismanagement throughout its short history, Nissalke is committed to market and building a winning team through the the college draft. "The trades made in New Orleans were incredible," Nissalke said. "This was the first year w e had our own draft pick," he said.
