The misdemeanant probation is handled by a contract between Salt Lake County and the State Department of Corrections. Court Services supervises work in process and reviews completed work in a more individual, closely supervised kind of probation. The rehabilitation aspect of the program is located in a portion of the Salt Lake County Complex. It is a residential type rehabilitation center providing a minimum community-base- d security for carefully selected people who program would otherwise spend the time in jail. Handles county overflow Dave Nicholson, residential director, said the facility handles the overflow from the Salt Lake County Jail, saving taxpayers the burden of building a new jail. According to Nicholson, before the program was instituted, the jail's population exceeded 300 It has now been reduced to 190. The rehabilitation facility is currently handling 24 male offenders and two female offenders. The rehabilitation center was opened June 10 and according to Nicholson, there is "a lot of gearing up still going on." Many criticisms of the program are valid, he says since the program is so new. Medical and dental attention are still being arranged. Court Services Director Stanley W. rt AUTOMOTIVE ' ;"" by MARY DICKSON Chronicle staff Less than half of the people arrested and booked into jail are found guilty but taxpayers pay for the time they spend in jail, for their family's welfare, and possibly for a larger jail in the future. Salt Lake County, funded by the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration of the federal government, has developed a program of court services to combat the problem. The Salt Lake County Department of Court Services provides an alternative to the loss of time, money and human program for safe, dignity with a four-pafrom release jail. responsible Pre-trirelease program Salt Lake County Court Services plan is a replication of the now famous and successful Des Moines, Iowa project.
