Dr. Armando Navarro, assistant professor of political science, is teaching Chicano studies as well as poetical science courses. He is among a growing number of Chicano faculty members teaching in the departments of history, psychology, sociotooy, education, literature, linguistics and political science. The University has the largest Chicano faculty in the nation. "I don't see muself as a professor in an ivory tower philosophizing about the good life," said the professor. "I am very action oriented." The son of illiterate parents in southern California, Navarro graduated from high school and entered the U.S. Army, where he developed much of his competitive A ld spirit. "People were looking at me first as a Chicano and second as an individual," he said. He jumped at the chance to attend Officer Candidate School. "The idea was always to prove to somebody that a Chicano could be a good officer," he said. After an honorable discharge he graduated cum laude from Clare mont Men's College and was awarded a fellowship at the University of California at Riverside. While studying there he received two Ford Foundation grants. Meanwhile he was active in the Chicano known community, among contemporary Chicanos as the "barrio." Still have power "I learned from history," he said, "that in the absence of money the only thing the poor people have is the power to organize." In college he organized and was president of the Mexican-AmericaPolitical Association. He helped the barrio develop its own housing n programs, corporations, and tutorial and cultural programs. At the same time he will be seeking bargain buys for the University. His major interest will be to expand the library holdings of journals and monographs in Slavic studies. "We presently have approximately 6,300 monographs and 425 humanities and social science journals in this area," he said, "but many series go back only a few years." Most earlier editions are not available in the United States, Mathison noted, and even if they were, the cost would be 400 to 500 percent of Russian prices, including mailing expenses.
