Weber got out of the inning when Tom Martin and Steve Cowley flew out, but not before the Utes had sent nine men to the plate in the inning. Utah picked up its final run of the contest when John McBride t home run slugged a field wall. over the Asked about his towering homer after the game McBride offered; "The pitch was a little inside. I was thinking fastball at the time and that's exactly what he threw, an inside fastball." The Ute win was the final of the season between meeting Utah and Weber State. The Utes were totally dominated in the first game as the Wildcats struck for four runs in the fifth inning and added single tallies in the first.third, and sixth. Weber pitcher Dave Day kept the Ute hitters at bay throughout the contest as he allowed only five hits while striking out eight. Utah coach Tom Kilgore used most of his pitching staff in an effort to ready them for nine Western Athletic Conference tussles at home. The Ute mentor used a total of seven pitchers during the twin bill, with Tom Moriarty getting credit for the win in the second game and Mark Colerick being slapped with the loss in the initial contest. Kilgore was a bit upset after the games saying "The guys thought they could just show up here today and win, its been so long since we've played on our own field I guess they thought the win was automatic." Kilgore was, however, happy that the Utes came back to win the second game after dropping the first by such a margin. "I'm glad we finally got some runs and won the second game, we need some momentum going into all these conference games." The Utes face Colorado State in a three-gamseries this weekend and then host Brigham Young Mondav and Tuesday of next weok. e |
