PACKED DAYS . 16-i- loca- is, no justification whatsoever' for calling- upon all the people i: our country, in cluding those in far away Alaska 1 and Hawaii, to subsidize local passenger traf fic in suburban New York. This is strictly a " r it-M- n for the commuters in this area. If gov n J featherbed-din- g Dr. kershner and in the fixing of rates had not been practiced for many long years, the railroads would not find themselves in their present predicament. Government intervention caused the trouble in the first place, and now more of it is being called for to try to effect a cure. The effects of using a narcotic, however, are never overcome by resorting to greater doses of the drug. Always, the cure of socialism is said to be more socialism. That's why a mixed economy is not lasting. As a Russian official said to me in the Kremlin a few years ago, "A mixed economy cannot be permanent. It will either swing back to freedom or go all the way on into complete soc a'ism or government managed economy." There is no reason why the! wheat farmers of Kansas or the coal miners of West Virginia, or the fishermen in Alaska should be called upon to pay a part of the railroad fares of people who want to live in Stamford, Con-necticut, and work in New York.' Those who believe that we can have more if, instead of paying our own bills, we pay the bills of each other, are entirely mistaken. When we think someone else is paying the bill, we are far more extravagant, and the total cost of all the goods and services that all the people of the country consume is vastly greater than it would be if each person and each community paid its own way.
