Bear River High school head football coach Don Petersen has had his grid iron hopefuls banging heads for the past two weeks in preparation for the first game of the year Aug. 24, against the Davis Darts. The Darts will travel to the Bear River lair for the pre -- school game which should give spectators an inkling of the talent although inexperienced that has been assembled in this year's squad. "We've got a pretty good c re w in coming here," coach Pet- ersen predicted, but he's not making any rash promises. "We should win a couple of games more than last year." Last Year's Bear River gridders compiled a three win five loss record. Seven lettermen will be back from that squad and will have to serve as the nucleus for this year's team. Those returnees include Richard Wood at 5' 8" and 150 pounds. Wood held down the quarterback job last year but may be shifted to a running back position this year. Another returning letterman is Allan Williams at center. The 6' 3" 170 pounder senior should be a good pass rusher if he is quick enough to overcome his relatively small size. Kevin Oyler and Craig Nelson at 5 8" and about 170 pounds will bring some experience to the line while Bucky Lansford, a 6' 1" tackle at 185 pounds will provide more ex- perience. other returnees who should bring a little experience along with them are Layne PetTwo ersen at end, a 165 pound 6 senior, and Randy Nelson, a 6' 200 pounder. The high school coach is counting on some newcomers to beef up his otherwise featherweight line. Last year the team had a pair of 170 pound tackles that batted their heads up much bigger men all season but were unable to cope with heavier linemen. "It's kind of joyful to see a 200 pounder walking around." The coaches mouth is already watering over 265 pound 6 4" Johnny Barrera who walked into the summer training session this year along with a friend. The heavyweight young "shows tremendous prospects," Petersen praised. Another junior who could help beef up the line is Jeff Lish, a 210 pound 5'9" center. "Both boys will help us a great deal," Petersen said. The coach has also got his eye on another young man who wandered in from the far reaches of Park Valley and donned a football uniform for the first time. Bert Kunzler at 6' 3" and 190 pounds could be one of the more pleasant surprises on the team depending on how aggressive he proves out and his quickness to learn. The coaches are also looking at young Rick Adams, 6' and 160 pounds, who could become the "mainstring" quarterback if Wood moves to a running back position. Others in the backfield could include Brad Gibbs, Kent Na-gand J. Neal John. And the coach isn't talking about it too loud, but a couple of sophmores look good and could see a lot of action. Two of the young sophs are Brad Cutler and Mark Weese. The wishbone formation made famous by Texas will be the 3" ao basic formation for this year's offense, the coach noted. But the formation could be modified with a lot of "wings." The wishbone which facilitates the running game will have to do just that for the Bears since a quarterback with a throwing arm is not around. The offense will be called on to carry the brunt of the Bear attack. "Our strength is always offense because we don't have the size to defense," Petersen said. But with the additional size the line should be "quite a bit better while the backs will be a bit weaker and inexperienced." Overall, "we realiy expect we'll have a better ball team this year than last," Petersen observed. If sheer numbers mean anything, this year's team has a somewhat better chance that those of the past More than 80 kids turned out for the summer workouts and for Bear Riverthe smallest school in the region that's "unusual." On the bright side, the Bear's have one of the best season schedules they've ever had from a spectator point of view. The youthful Bears will play five home games and five away games. And the Bear's first three games should give them a chance to test their stuff before league play starts. Following next Friday's game, the Bears will meettwo Idaho teams prior to the Sept. 14, league opener at Logan. Following is the Bear schedule: Aug. 4 Davis Darts at BR Aug. 31 Burley at BR Sept Sept Sept Ben Lomond at BR (non league) Oct 5 Box Elder at BR Oct 10 BR at Roy Oct 18 BR at Sky View Oct. 26 Weber at BR Skyview should be the team Sept 28 to watch according to the Bear River coach.
