The JL-- L?L? F THIS YEARS' BR BASEBALL team opened their season with a bang. The Bears shut down the Davis Darts in their first prao tice game, 6- -1 on two-h- it pitching by their two ace hurlers. The BR a. Cold weather and pitching don't usually go together, but the elements didn't seem to have much effect on Bear River High school's two ace hurlers last week as they shut down the Davis Darts, on one run and two hits. Bear River's diamond men opened their 1973 season by trouncing the down state Darts 1 in a practice game last Friday at Kaysville. Much of the credit has to go to Alan Williams, a right handed hurler and Scott Belna;, a lefty. Both hurlers were unbeatable. Belnap shut down the Dart attack with only one hit in four innings while Williams gave up only one more hit in the remaining three innings. And the thing which warms coaches hearts should have Bear River coach Dick Green sky high. Neither pitcher gave up a walk in the entire seven innings. The Bear River attack was assisted with seven hits, five of them for extra bases. Kevin Bair, a junior in his first year with the team, came up with a triple and a double to match two doubles by Richard Wood. Pitcher Alan Williams aided his own cause with a double and lefty Scott Belnap contributed two singles. Bears begin League play against Box Elder, Friday, on the Bees home soil lop-sid- ed prospects. Five sophomores are also waiting their chance to crack the starting line up. The five include Jeff Fronk, infielder; Mitch Rogers, outfield; Jeff Bowcutt, catcher; Jerry 1973 hunting license sand permits for cougar and bear go on sale April 15. There the individual more than the team counts. And, Coach Hughes says, there are enough standouts on this year's team to make it tough. Craig Hawkes, a senior at shortstop, gives the Rive rites a good defensive infield but he "needs a little work on hitting," Coach Green said. Outfielder Brian Chadaz is a good defensive outfielder and Roger Anderson "shows promise," the coach notes. Kevin Bair, a junior, supplies the added offensive punch to the line up. Kevin Oyler and Clark Hurd, both juniors, round out the top The win plus the confidence that comes with it should stand the Rive rites, in good stead. Friday they attve to take on their cross-coun- ty rivals the Box Elder Bees on the Bee's diamond. The Box Elder rivalry kicks off the beginning of a seven game league schedule. Coach Green pegs the Box Elder nine and the Roy Royals as the ones to beat in region competition. Heading the starting line up for the Riverite nine this year are, of course, Alan Williams and Scott Belnap at pitcher. With last Friday's performance behind then, both boys should see a lot of action. Acting as their battery mate will be Eddie Shaw, senior. First base this year is being held down by whichever doesn't pitcher happen to be on the mound. That arrangement allows Coach Green to get the bats of both pitchers into the line up and after last week's performance it's obvious they belong there. Second base is held down by Todd Miller, junior, a man with a "good glove" according to the coach. Richard Wood, a junior, holds down the hot corner at third. The Bears are supposed to host the Bobcats of Skyview this afternoon if the weather permits. The trackmen have yet to get into competition against their, foes. Last week's scheduled meet against Logan was called off because of weather. Intact, the tracksters have only W Sri Hurlers Shut Down Darts recently managed to get out onto the track. Coach Durrell Hughes looks on the team competition with a dim view. Division of Wildlife Resourc- es biologists transplanted six turkeys to the Enterprise, Utah area in March to supplement six introduced to that area in January. The three toms and chree hens were trapped in the Boulder Mountains. The earlier transplants, one torn and five hens, were trapped near Cedar City. The area will be closed to the spring hunt. Additionally, biologists trapped two toms near Orderville as part of a study of the large birds. Radios were attached to the turkeys to enable biologists to follow their movements. Thus far, 26 turkeys have been trapped this year; 14 for the study and 12 for transplant- ing purposes. .rf "i? . mm Chunk M Bologna ib. 69 ib. 99 rlllel Morrell All Beef Franks News Bowling m Minute Bear River Valley Ladies Steaks Game Hdcp.
