TILLER CORPORAL TILLER Principal - Bear River High It has been my pleasure to visit many schools throughout the United States the past five years. First under the Ford Foundation Administrative internship where they provided funds to visit innovative oriented schools, and secondly as a college administrator whose responsibility was to visit schools in the Midwest and East Coast. With this background, I would like to make some and personal generalization comparison between the Box Elder and Utah schools and those I have seen. My first generalization would be that the taxpayer in the State of Utah should be complimented for providing the quality physical plants that we have in the State. The college and university campus's have no equal in the nation as far as aesthetic beauty is concerned. The public schools are, in my opinion, in the same category. I have been in large high schools in other parts of the country that still have a single, twisted light cord with a 60 watt bulb hanging to provide the needed lighting. The second generalization is that Utah places more emphasis on education - even though our tax base is much smaller than most states. (Uncle Sam owns about 70 of Utah which takes it out of the tax rolls.) nevertheless proeducation to a higher percentage of our youngsters for a longer length of time. (This is supported by fact.) The thi'd generalization is tnat there seems to be a more professional feeling among the faculty and staff which leads to a cohesiveness that I didn't see in other states. Necessity has forced Utahns to consolidate our schools and effort so that finances are used more wisely; as an example of this is one Midwest community of 700 that was located six miles from a community of 6,000, but had their own rundown combination elementary, junior high, high school, with a superintendent for the buildings that we paid $24,000; a high school principal in the same building that was making $22,000, and an elementary prwas incipal whose salary $18,000. These three m?n were administrators of 16 teachers and about 400 students. This type of wasteful use of funds would not be tolerated in Utah schools (and certainly shouldn't be.)
