Their hobby of collecting Insulators happened "quite by accident." According to Mr. Welling he purchased a "Telegraph line running from Tremonton to Portage this past spring. I used the poles to build a corral for my livestock," he said, "and while working with the poles some friends asked if they could have some of the insulators. Up to this point we had been discarding the insulators and throwing them down the holes where the telephone poles had been." "Then I discovered a lot of people never asked, but merely helped themselves to my insulators. I decided if they were 'collector items' Pd start collecting them too." Welling and his wife, Rhoda, have acquired approximately 250 different types in all shapes, sizes and colors. Some of their oldest insulators date back to 1870one is Cuavet and is green in color. Some are rare types, some have double and even triple t Knits Reg.$4.49yd. S"' Safe$$39.49 J yd. Just recently when the Well-in- gs were on vacation down San Francisco way they acquired more than a hundred different types. They have also visited insulator collectors in the Salt Lake area and swapped various kinds. "As a rule I don't buy and I don't sell I would much rather trade," Welling stated.
